Attributes of the Holy Ghost Created in the Image of God

Parley Pratt2Key to the Science of Theology, pp. 95-96; “He is an intelligent being, in the image of God, possessing every organ, attribute, sense, sympathy, affection that is possessed by God Himself.
But these are possessed by man, in his rudimental state, in a subordinate sense of the word. Or, in other words, these attributes are in embryo, and are to be gradually developed.

They resemble a bud, a germ, which gradually develops into a bloom and then, by progress, produces the mature fruit after its own kind.  The Gift of the Holy Ghost adapts itself to all these organs or attributes.

It quickens all the intellectual faculties, increases, enlarges, expands and purifies all the natural passions and affections and adapts them by the gift of wisdom, to their lawful use.

It inspires virtue, kindness, goodness, tenderness, gentleness and charity. It develops beauty of person, form and features. It tends to give health, vigor, animation and social feeling. It invigorates all the faculties of the physical and intellectual man. It strengthens and gives tone to the nerves. In short, it is, as it were, marrow to the bone, joy to the heart, light to the eyes, music to the ears, and life to the whole being. …Such is the gift of the Holy Ghost, and such are its operations, when received through the lawful channel- the Divine, Eternal Priesthood.” – Parley P. Pratt

Isaiah 32:58; “The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful. 6 For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. 7 The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right. 8 But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.”

As I read the writings of Mr. Parley Pratt, I had to shake my head. One has to wonder how much alone time these men had to come up with their theories.

A few of the things Mr. Pratt said should stop every Mormon in their tracks and make them think about this god they worship. Let’s review just a couple of the ways he described the Holy Spirit, which all Christians know is actually God Himself!

‘He is an intelligent being, in the image of God’

Where in the Bible does it say the Holy Ghost is created?

‘,,,possessing every organ, attribute, sense, sympathy, affection that is possessed by God Himself,,,’

How can he possess all the attributes of God if he’s not God?

How can he possess organs when Mormon dogma contradicts such a theory? The Holy Ghost is just a spirit matter, hence his name…

‘…these attributes are in embryo, and are to be gradually developed.’

How did the Holy Ghost obtain these attributes? Where does it say these things? The Bible, Joseph Smith…?

‘The Gift of the Holy Ghost adapts itself to all these organs or attributes…’

How can the Mormon Holy Ghost do these things when D&C 130:3 contradicts this theory? “…the idea that the Father and the Son dwell in a man’s heart is an old sectarian notion, and is false.”

‘It quickens all the intellectual faculties, increases, enlarges, expands and purifies all the natural passions and affections and adapts them by the gift of wisdom, to their lawful use.’

Again, this is also questionable. How can the Mormon Holy Ghost do this if his power is limited and he doesn’t necessarily have to be with a believer all the time?

D&C 130:22-23; “…the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us. 23 A man may receive the Holy Ghost, and it may descend upon him and not tarry with him.”

And last but not least…

Where in the Bible does it say God only works through a ‘lawful channel’?

If the Mormon priesthood originated in 1830 with the Mormon Church, how can it be eternal?
