LDS Church ‘Retires’ Home and Visiting Teaching

In what the Church referred to as ‘an historic General Conference’, several announcements were made including new apostles, and the ‘retirement’ of the Visiting and Home Teaching programs implemented back in the ‘50’s.

Today we’re looking at the highlights of what leaders said regarding the Home Teaching program, and tomorrow we’ll look at the installment of their new non-white apostles. Woo-hoo! To read the stories in full, see the links at Deseret News and the LDS Church.

A couple of remarks they made warrants serious attention. We pray that if you’re a home, or visiting teacher you’ll stop to think about their choice of words. Here are the highlights –

‘…we will implement a newer, holier approach to caring and ministering to others. We will refer to these efforts simply as ministering …’

Tagging it with a new label doesn’t make anything holier Mr. Nelson. And works for salvation aren’t holy either.

‘… Effective ministering efforts are enabled by the innate gifts of the sisters, and by the incomparable power of the priesthood,” President Nelson said. “We all need such protection from the cunning wiles of the adversary…’

Incomparable power of the priesthood? Really?

What about God’s power, Mr. Nelson? It seems mighty lofty to place the Mormon priesthood on a higher level than the Lord…

Furthermore, the ‘cunning wiles of the adversary’ is what made these men believe their power is as great as God’s.

‘We have a heaven-sent opportunity as an entire church to demonstrate pure religion undefiled before God’

That’s true, it’s just too bad they don’t walk the talk. Mr. Nelson’s talk was followed by the remarks of Jeffrey Holland. Here in part is what he told listening ears –

‘I warn you, a new name, new flexibility, and fewer reports will not make one ounce of difference in our service unless we see this as an invitation to care for one another in a bold new holier way, as President Nelson has just said.’

Again, how does this make you holy? What about accepting the truth in the Bible where it says Jesus is God?

The next person to speak on this was the Relief Society President, Jean Bingham. She said the new program will be filled with people being given new assignments to watch over, and care for individuals. Hmmm…it sounds a lot like the old program with a shiny new bow.

As the Church busies itself with new titles of dead works, let’s pray they’ll see the truth in the futile attempts of working to be holy. Why not just accept you can only be holy through the blood of Jesus Christ? It seems that would be so much easier, and the only correct thing to do!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
