Why Does the Book of Mormon Contradict Mormonism?

08 October

Three Witnesses TestimonyToday we’re looking at three key doctrines of Mormonism listed in LDS canon. Our question is this:

Why does the Book of Mormon, which is supposedly the most correct book on the face of the earth, contradict LDS doctrines?

The subject matters we’re looking at are the Trinity, Jesus is God, and the immutability of God, with biblical references coming from the following verses –

God’s Immutability – (His quality of not changing) Malachi 3:6 Numbers 23:19 James 1:17 Psalm 33:11

Jesus is God –

John 10:30 John 8:58 John 1:1,14 John 20:28 Titus 2:13

Trinity –

Deuteronomy 6:4 1 Corinthians 8:4 Galatians 3:20 1 Timothy 2:5

Those three subjects are heavy hitters, and we could spend eons discussing each, but for the sake of time and space, we’ll briefly discuss one definition of the three. If you’d like further info, be sure to check out our site!

The immutability of God is quite literally impossible to ignore simply because it’s interwoven everywhere you look in the Bible.

In order for something to change it needs to exist within the realm of time, and it has to take place in some sort of chronological order; i.e. a start and end date. Since God doesn’t exist inside the constraints of time, He doesn’t hold any attributes providing Him the ability to change, thus the meaning of eternal.

Bottom line: this alone would make for a great witnessing tool!

Now with our biblical understanding behind us, on to the contradictions in LDS canon…

God’s Immutability –

Journal of Discourses 1:123; “Remember that God, our heavenly Father, was perhaps once a child, and mortal like we ourselves, and rose step by step in the scale of progress, in the school of advancement; has moved forward and overcome, until He has arrived at the point where He now is.” – Orson Hyde, Salt Lake City, October 6, 1853

Jesus is God –

Journal of Discourses 4:1-2; “I have learned by experience that there is but one God that pertains to this people, and He is the God that pertains to this earth—the first man. That first man sent his own Son to redeem the world, to redeem his brethren; his life was taken, his blood shed, that our sins might be remitted. That Son called twelve men and ordained them to be Apostles, and when he departed the keys of the kingdom were deposited with three of those twelve, viz.: Peter, James, and John. Peter held the keys pertaining to that Presidency, and he was the head.” – Heber C. Kimball, Salt Lake City, June 29, 1856

Trinity –

Selected Writings of Robert L. Millet: Gospel Scholars Series, p 190; “The four Gospels are particularly plain in setting forth the true nature of God and the various labors of the members of the Godhead. Indeed, one has to become involved in a stretching series of doctrinal maneuvers in order to derive the concept of Trinity or of a triune God in the New Testament…

But Latter-day Saints are not limited by what is in the text of the New Testament. Through modern revelation we come to perceive and appreciate precious truths that have been lost to the religious world, insights that bring clarity and conviction to the study of the Bible”. – Robert Millet

The references above are true Mormon theology. The references below are from the Book of Mormon. The Church does this kind of thing solely to confuse people.

Trinity

Testimony of the Three Witnesses; “…And honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God.”

Jesus is God

2 Nephi 26:12; “And I spake concerning the convincing of the Jews. that Jesus is the very Christ…that Jesus is The Christ, the Eternal God.”

The Immutability of God

Mormon 9:9; “For do we not read that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever and in Him there is no variableness neither shadow of changing?”

Moroni 8:18; “For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity.”

If you’re LDS, which LDS story do you believe? If you love Jesus, what are your thoughts about what God has told us in the Bible?
