What is necromancy?

Mormon Doctrine pg. 526; “Necromancy is that form of divination which attempts to foretell the future by consultation with the dead. Sometimes the term is enlarged to include magic in general. It is and has been a common practice among apostate peoples, but the Lord calls it an abomination and expressly commands Israel to avoid it. (Deut. 18:9-14.)”

Leviticus 20:27; “A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.”

In God’s display of His love towards us is a description with graphic detail of consequences when consorting with dead and/or familiar spirits.  The most stunning of all these is when God tells us that we’ve defiled the land and how He sees it as a form of prostitution.

This startling warning will hopefully jolt us into obedience for fear of offending Him who gave us our very life.  Remorsefully, I see with clarity that my people have not been affected by God’s pronouncement upon them or the soil they sit upon.  How I pray they would denounce this angel of light Moroni who heralds in nothing but destruction.

The Holman Bible Dictionary says this about necromancy;

NECROMANCY (Neh kroh muhn’ kih) Conjuring the spirits of the dead to predict or influence future events. See Medium.

MEDIUM One possessed by (Lev. 20:22) or consulting (Deut. 18:11) a ghost or spirit of the dead, especially for information about the future. Acting as a medium was punishable by stoning (Lev. 20:27); consulting a medium, by exclusion from the congregation of Israel (Lev. 20:6). The transformation of Saul from one who expelled mediums (1 Sam. 28:3) to one who consulted a medium at En-dor (28:8-19) graphically illustrates his fall.

The Hebrew word translated medium (ob) may refer to the spirit of a dead person, to the medium possessed by the spirit, or to images used to conjure up spirits. Manasseh made such images (2 Kings 21:6; 2 Chron. 33:6). Josiah destroyed them as part of his reforms (2 Kings 23:24). Saul’s success in quickly locating a medium (1 Sam. 28:8) points both to the popularity of the practice of consulting the dead and the difficulty of eradicating it.

Isaiah 8:19 suggests a possible connection between the consulting of mediums and ancestor worship. Those to be consulted are termed “fathers” and “gods.” (Compare 1 Sam. 28:13 where Samuel is described as elohim or “god.”) The chirping and muttering of the spirits perhaps refers to the inarticulate sounds which must be interpreted by the medium. Consulting of mediums defiled the land and was described as prostitution. God’s people were to trust God in times of distress and not resort to other “gods” in an attempt to learn the future.”

Mormons seem to believe that necromancy means what the LDS Church says it does instead of truth.  Ask your Mormon friend or loved one why Joseph Smith was talking with Moroni, a resurrected man that supposedly lived in the fifth century.  Or why the Mormon people believe it’s all right to speak to their dead relatives.

You don’t have to wear a pointy hat or sit behind a crystal ball to fit the description of practicing magic.

With Love in Christ;

    It is misleading to imply that Joseph Smith conjured up dead people, he called upon Father and Father decided which messenger to send.
