Thought of the Day about Mormonism and 2 Nephi 30:6

12 May

This thought of the day came about after speaking with an uncle of mine earlier this week and our conversation regarding my great-grandmother’s ethnicity.

Michelle @ Teens for ChristAfter we ended our call I began wondering once again why the Church would’ve allowed this side of my family into their exclusive priesthood back in the late 1800’s when they emigrated here. Half my family qualifies for the very Mormon coveted status of ‘white and delightsome’ and the other half…well, not so much.  They’re black Welsh.  Oops.

This topic has been the thorn in my side for as long as I can remember.  I prayed and repented countless times as a child for my so-called rejection of Jesus in the pre-existence. My coloring was a sure sign of early apostasy on my part and to say that shame ran deep would be an understatement.

As my grandmother’s descendants continue to intermarry with other nationalities the sure-tell signs of being black are less evident just as the LDS prophet Kimball said about the Lamanites back in 1960 (Improvement Era 1960). His racist comment that American Indians (aka Lamanites) were looking more righteous as they mixed with white people wasn’t lost on those who have any melanoma showing through their skin. I’ve wondered if he would’ve said the same thing about my family if he’d known them.

For me personally I pray every day that when non-white people join the Church God opens their heart and eyes to the blatantly racist canon they carry to church with them every week.  I’m praying their hearts are pained when they begin to wonder what they did to offend Jesus in the pre-existence and yet they’re madly in love with Him here on earth.

I do this because it’s one of the ways God opened my eyes to His truth. As painful the process was living through it, I’m now eternally grateful for His provision. It seemed unconscionable to me that I would’ve rejected Him in a previous life I couldn’t remember.

Until the Church hits their knees to privately repent and publicly confess their racist doctrines are wrong I’ll continue to publish the truth about this.  This is one of the top reasons I left the Church. That pain manifested itself again when speaking with my dear uncle who is well into his eighties.  Please pray for him and his wife – thank you!!!

As I was looking over some of the canon in the Book of Mormon I wondered what the Church thought they were doing when they tried to explain the changes they made to 2 Nephi 30:6.

If an error was made in 2 Nephi 30:6 where the word “white” was incorrectly used instead of “pure” then what about other verses in the Book of Mormon that reflect the same theory? Why weren’t they changed? They lend themselves to being as racist as the edited verse in 2 Nephi 30:6 did so let’s take a look at these things in context!

2 Nephi 5:21; “…wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome…”

2 Nephi 30:6; “…they shall be a white and a delightsome people.” (Original wording of 2 Nephi 30:6 – 1981 & thereafter it reads ‘…they shall be a pure and a delightsome people”).

Jacob 3:8; “O my brethren, I fear that unless ye shall repent of your sins that their skins will be whiter than yours, when ye shall be brought with them before the throne of God.”

3 Nephi 2:15; “And their curse was taken from them, and their skin became white like unto the Nephites.”

If you exchange the word ‘white’ for ‘pure’ in the other examples would they make sense? Jacob 3:8 is especially telling! Does God ever tell us that we’re pure because of our skin?

The bottom line is that the Church was facing three major issues within their dogma and they found themselves at a crossroads.

1.The NCAA was catching some heat from players on teams who were threatening boycotting BYU because of their racist beliefs.

2. The temple in South America was getting ready to be opened and if the majority of LDS members were descended from Africans then how do they explain to them they can’t attend the temple rites when they dump all their money into the Church and their hands were used to build the temple in Brazil?

3.The Church was being investigated in the early ‘70’s about their non-profit status and their racist views which were at odds with each other so something had to give.

Won’t you pray with me that whites and non-whites alike will see the truth in these things? When God created us He did so in His image! Genesis 1:26.  Is God white?  Is He black? What about Asian or American Indian? The Bible says God is spirit in John 4:24 so how could a spirit be white and delightsome?

Furthermore, seeing as how Jesus was born to Mary, a Hebrew from Israel, it’s hard to imagine that either of them would be white and delightsome, yet the Book of Mormon clearly states this in 1 Nephi 11:13 and 3 Nephi 19:30.

“And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the great city of Jerusalem, and also other cities. And I beheld the city of Nazareth; and in the city of Nazareth I beheld a virgin, and she was exceedingly fair and white.” – 1 Nephi 11:13

“And when Jesus had spoken these words he came again unto his disciples; and behold they did pray steadfastly, without ceasing, unto him; and he did smile upon them again; and behold they were white, even as Jesus.” – 3 Nephi 19:30

With all this we have to remember how it speaks to the Mormon false prophets and their false prophecies. If God mandated that blacks couldn’t be part of their holy priesthood why did they allow my family in? The Bible says we need to reject false prophets – Deut 18:20-22.

For whatever reason the Lord is allowing this scenario to take place with my uncle and he’s the only person who hasn’t shunned me so I’m on my knees. The fact that I’m not the only one discussing this subject matter, speaks volumes to the impact this lie has had upon the Mormon people.

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
