They’re Baaack. LDS Attempts at Unauthorized Baptisms of Famous People, Dead or Alive

25 December

Three days before Christmas I opened a Google-Alert e-mail to read about an all too familiar story in the Herald Extra. AP reporter, Brady McCombs, filed a report on Helen Radkey’s latest discovery of a chronic problem the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seems to be plagued with. The necromantic practices of baptizing living persons, and posthumously baptizing the famous and infamous dead, is rearing its ugly head once again.

The Church is now dealing with a self-inflicted headache, and hired a full-time staff of four to babysit the massive collection of names they’ve accumulated for their genealogical database. Their sole job is to be on the lookout for names that have been flagged as ‘unauthorized’ for ceremonial rituals performed in their temples.

Foregoing the issue of this not being biblically sound, we thought it was interesting the list of names are those capturing society’s headlines right now. Moreover, it seems there are some in the Church who didn’t get the memo not to posthumously baptize, or perform rituals, for people to whom they’re not related.

In this latest go-round, Helen Radkey found the Church thwarted some, but not all, attempts of people trying to perform baptisms for people like Carrie Fisher, OJ Simpson, and even Charles Manson. I suppose if they’d baptize Hitler at one point, Manson wouldn’t seem all that bad.

It’s a very sad day when it’s come to this. If you’re LDS, is it okay with you  the Church is spending money on trying to protect itself from a publicity nightmare? Who decided on their salary?

If you’re LDS, is this what you picture Christianity to be? Why, or why not?

We’re praying Mormons will look deeper into Paul’s admonition to the young church in Corinth to stop what they were doing at the time, and do the same.

1 Corinthians 15:29 “Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?”

Please pray for those who believe they need to go to the temple and offer salvation to someone they don’t know.

One more thing – if you’re LDS, is it really your job to offer salvation to someone, or is that Jesus’ job? And why are they offering salvation to murderers if the Church says those who murder can’t be saved?

We’re praying for all Mormons. Christmas is a great time to ask Jesus into your life!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
