The Seer, Vol. 01, No. 09, September 1853, p. 132; “We were begotten by our Father in heaven; the person of our Father in Heaven was begotten on a previous heavenly world by His Father; and again, He was begotten by still a more ancient Father ….” – Orson Pratt
Deut. 33:27; “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.”
God’s status of being eternal is what got me in trouble in LDS Seminary. Asking the teacher to define the word eternal was out of bounds. Sadly, this type of reaction is still going on today for many in Mormonism.
In sharp contrast is the word of the Lord. In the Hebrew the word for eternal is qedem which means ancient (time), before, old, past. The Hebrew word for everlasting is much like it. In the Hebrew it’s ʿôlām, meaning always, forever, perpetual, eternity.
What a comfort it is to us knowing He is always our refuge! Sadly, Mormons have no such assurance. If they can’t know for certain God won’t change, how will they have assurance he would always be their refuge?
