The Bible and the Book of Mormon 2

Welcome back to our examination of the LDS website on the Bible and Book of Mormon!  Just as we did in part one, we’re looking at the claims of the Church and comparing those with what God tells us in His word. This time we’ll be looking at the next section on the LDS site which focuses mainly on the Book of Mormon.

We’ve listed all biblical and LDS references at the end of this article.

This is what their page said;

“What does the Book of Mormon say about the Bible?

2 Nephi 3:12, 3 Nephi 15:21, 23:1”

According to the Doctrinal Commentary on the Book of Mormon vol. 1 p 208, the passage in 2nd Nephi means the two books work together because you can’t fight false doctrines with just the Bible. This commentary written by Joseph Fielding McConkie and Robert Millet stated that it’s only when the Bible and the Book of Mormon are used together that contentions will end. In fact let’s take a quick look at what else they said about the Bible;

“In the historical sense, the Bible has been a book of war and bloodshed as men and nations have quarrelled [sic] over its meaning; innumerable martyrs have been left in its wake, and Europe was virtually torn asunder.”

Thus their argument we need the Book of Mormon to save us from such misunderstandings.  Yeah, okay…so what about 2 Timothy 3:16 which tells us the Bible is good for reproof and teaching?

The problem with using the Isaiah phrase in 3 Nephi 23:1 is how Isaiah contradicts the claims of the Book of Mormon.  I often wonder what goes on in the minds of Mormons when they discover these things.  Isaiah loved his countrymen like no other in his day. After begging them to abandon their idolatrous ways he finally had to start telling them about their impending doom.

God had had enough.

As a reminder, the Israelites had prostituted themselves and their country to witches and necromancers of the day. They loved to speculate about their futures by listening to the lies of the fortune tellers who tricked them into believing they could talk to their dead relatives.

In 3rd Nephi 15:21 the Church is claiming again that Jesus told the Nephites the “other sheep” are those living in the Americas and not the Gentiles living in the Middle East.  Wrong answer.

The other problem in 3 Nephi 23:1 is nothing but a short commentary from the Mormon Jesus telling the people to search out the words of Isaiah. This is interesting because the text doesn’t tell the reader which writings of Isaiah to study nor does it give any specifics of what is expected of the Nephites.

The next section on the LDS website for this subject said;

“The Book of Mormon is a companion volume of scripture to the Bible. It both confirms and testifies of the truthfulness of the messages in the Bible. The Bible and the Book of Mormon complement each other, both providing a witness that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Redeemer of the world.”

The Bible contradicts the Book of Mormon so how can it complement it???  Throughout the Bible we are warned about false prophets with their lies and false messages so how could the Book of Mormon be a “companion” to what God says is evil?

Besides all that the Book of Mormon doesn’t confirm the Bible at all! In fact there are two sections of the Book of Mormon telling the reader a Bible isn’t all they need and isn’t sufficient for God’s children. Now if you’re a supporter of the Bible why would you say something like that?

1 Nephi 13:26; “Wherefore, thou seest that after the book hath gone forth through the hands of the great and abominable church, that there are many plain and precious things taken away from the book, which is the book of the Lamb of God.”

2 Nephi 29:10; “Wherefore, because that ye have a Bible ye need not suppose that it contains all my words; neither need ye suppose that I have not caused more to be written.”

Galatians 1:6-9; “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”

The next section we come upon says;

“What does the Bible say about Jesus Christ?

Matthew 11:28-30, John 3:16-17, 14:6”

Well the passage in Matthew is one of my favorites since I got out of the Church, but it’d be pretty hard to hold onto when you’re so busy with all your endowment and ordinance works in the temple.  And just how do you reconcile Matthew 11:28-30 with 2 Nephi 25:23 which tells you that you’re saved by grace after all you can do….hmmm…

As for John 3:16-17…oh this breaks my heart.  Mormons don’t believe this. This passage of scripture implies that Jesus died on the cross for you. Mormons do not believe Jesus paid the price for your sin on the cross. They believe the atonement took place in the Garden of Gethsemane (D&C 19:18) and even then it was a conditional price. Again, you’re only saved by grace after all you can do…

And then we move onto John 14:6. If the Mormon Church truly taught this they wouldn’t have prophets and apostles today. Now NT era prophets are to be expected, but only in the proper time and place. Believing that you can’t be saved outside of the Mormon Church and their prophets is totally negating the words of Jesus in John 14:6; “I am the way the truth and the life…”  D&C 1:30 says the Mormon Church is the only true church on the face of the earth.  Jesus must not have gotten the memo…

The next section asks us the following question:

“What does the Book of Mormon say about Jesus Christ?

2 Nephi 2:6-8, 3 Nephi 11:8-11, Moroni 10:32”

Well let’s find out! It’s supposedly BC 588 and in 2 Nephi 2:6-8 it says that Jesus is the end of the Law who takes away sin.  We must have a broken heart and a contrite spirit” in order to be saved and it’s only “through his merits, mercy and grace” that we will be resurrected…in 588 BC.

Where in the Bible does it give such great detail about Jesus in this manner? Look, Isaiah 53 has to be one of the most revealing chapters of scripture in the OT revealing truths about Jesus. In fact there are 48 prophecies about Jesus in that one chapter alone and yet it doesn’t go into the detail this Book of Mormon passage does…

The passage from 3rd Nephi chapter eleven is contradictory to Mormon theology. Mormons don’t believe in original sin.  Their 2nd Article of Faith says; “We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.”

And lastly we have Moroni 10:32 which is nothing more than plagiarizing the Bible again – Romans 1:16 this time. My question is why they’d keep using the Bible when they believe it’s so corrupt? And why are there Greek and Latin words in the text when Joseph Smith emphatically declared it had no such thing.

So that’s it for the analysis of the LDS site comparing the Bible and the Book of Mormon. Our prayer is for the Mormons to diligently search out the truth. The Bible can’t possibly speak of the Book of Mormon in a favorable light when God warned His people throughout the centuries of those who come to trick and deceive.

Also remember the words of the Apostle Paul in the resurrection chapter of the Bible when he warned people to only cling to the words they delivered first to them about the gospel!

1 Corinthians 15:1-4; “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures”.

If someone’s story doesn’t line up with what Paul said then we are to disregard what they have to say no matter how good they sound!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle Grim

1 Cor. 1:18

2 Nephi 3:12; “Wherefore, the fruit of thy loins shall write; and the fruit of the loins of Judah shall write; and that which shall be written by the fruit of thy loins, and also that which shall be written by the fruit of the loins of Judah, shall grow together, unto the confounding of false doctrines and laying down of contentions, and establishing peace among the fruit of thy loins, and bringing them to the knowledge of their fathers in the latter days, and also to the knowledge of my covenants, saith the Lord.”

3 Nephi 15:21; “And verily I say unto you, that ye are they of whom I said: Other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.”

3 Nephi 23:1; “And now, behold, I say unto you, that ye ought to search these things. Yea, a commandment I give unto you that ye search these things diligently; for great are the words of Isaiah.”

Matthew 11:28-30; “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

John 3:16-17; “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

John 14:6; “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

2 Nephi 2:6-8; “Wherefore, redemption cometh in and through the Holy Messiah; for he is full of grace and truth. 7 Behold, he offereth himself a sacrifice for sin, to answer the ends of the law, unto all those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit; and unto none else can the ends of the law be answered. 8 Wherefore, how great the importance to make these things known unto the inhabitants of the earth, that they may know that there is no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, who layeth down his life according to the flesh, and taketh it again by the power of the Spirit, that he may bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, being the first that should rise.”

3 Nephi 11:8-11; “And it came to pass, as they understood they cast their eyes up again towards heaven; and behold, they saw a Man descending out of heaven; and he was clothed in a white robe; and he came down and stood in the midst of them; and the eyes of the whole multitude were turned upon him, and they durst not open their mouths, even one to another, and wist not what it meant, for they thought it was an angel that had appeared unto them. 9 And it came to pass that he stretched forth his hand and spake unto the people, saying: 10 Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. 11 And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning.”

Moroni 10:32; “Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.”

    Seriously! You need to find something better to do. I am a Mormon. I know the church is true. I have had experiences of my own that have saved me from a life in prison as well as a horrible meth addiction. The Book Of Mormon gave me what I have today and I will be forever grateful for the teachings and the direction it has given me in my life. I don’t sit here and judge others because of their beliefs and neither should you. If you have God in your life I am grateful. If you are part of a religious organization that is great. If you have had the chance to read the Bible it tells us not to judge or we will be judged at the last day by the only one who has the power to judge us and that is God. Good luck in your journey to happiness. Please let us be and worship the way we feel is best and you can worship the way you feel is best as well. God Bless.

      Mac – what is there to do that could be better than proclaiming to the world the real Jesus? The Lord rescued me from a life in prison and a meth addiction as well. What this website does is defend the accusations thrown at us Christians by the founder of Mormonism and perpetuated by the LDS church for the last 180 years. According to the LDS church, we are apostate. They also believe that “all Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the whore of Babylon, whom the Lord denounces”. While we have issues with the B of M, the real heretical teachings come from the other writings

    Typical double standard – did you scrutinize the Bible yet?

    Have any clue how many Christians turn atheist when they do? [Bart Ehrman, Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why ]

    See, anyone can find errors, the fruit of man; your burden is to see what’s good and of God. So far, you have demonstrated nothing but a newly found ability to use reason. I suggest you not experiment with it on the Book of Mormon.

    After you scrutinize the Bible the way you did the Book of Mormon, come back here and explain how you deal with Bible error and why you trust the Bible – CAN’T WAIT.

    Don’t criticize the ONLY book that confirms the:

    1. Virgin Birth

    2. Death

    3. Resurrection

    4. Ascension

    Of Jesus Christ!!

      Listen: the B of M only book to confirm??? Joseph Smith said that the B of M was the most perfect book ever written. It was written in “King James” style English from the 17th century, during the 1st 1/3 of the 19th century. There have been close to 4,000 changes since the first edition (including the title page that used to read, “Joseph Smith; Author and Proprieter”). Much of the B of M is plagerized directly from the King James Bible, which the LDS church says has been translated incorrectly (in areas where it doesn’t support Mormonism)
