Sunday School Old Testament: Lesson 27

24 March

old-testament-gospel-doctrine-teachers-manual-35570000The lesson begins in 1 Kings 12 with Solomon’s son King Rehoboam and his foolish actions which lead to the division between Judah and Israel. As it continues on, using Rehoboam his great-grandson Jehoshaphat as examples of what a godly leader should look like. The lesson lists five qualities any righteous leader must have to lead effectively.  These qualities are: gives service, trusts and obeys the Lord, has faith in God, teaches from the scriptures, and lastly follows the prophets.

Its true good, godly leaders do trust and have faith in the Lord, and they are honest in the way they deal and give service to those around them. However, when we’re talking about this list in light of Mormonism I have to ask these questions:

What god do they have faith and trust in? What scriptures do they teach from? Mormonism has four parts to what they call their “standard works”, and given the fact that most of Mormon scripture contradicts the Bible, which part their scripture are they teaching from? The final one, following the prophet says it all and truly would set the Mormon apart from any Christian leader. How does following the Mormon prophet make you a good leader?

What about Hebrews 1:1-2 where we read:

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son,whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; (emphasis mine)

I’ve heard Mormons profess a belief in what Jesus did as far as suffering and dying for our sins, and then of his resurrection. He has done and continues to do so much more than they give Him credit for.

As I was looking up a verse that encompassed what I wanted to say I found 2 Peter 1:3-4

“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”

Jesus gives us all we need to become the person, the leader He wants us to be. According to the world’s standards almost anyone can be a very successful leader, but if you don’t have Jesus (the real Jesus) what do you have?

Though they can’t see it Mormonism is following in the footsteps of Rehomboam who divided the people because of his disobedience, which in turn lead them away from God. Its teachings lead people into an idolatress relationship of worship to a false god, and as they continue to follow this false gospel it will only lead them astray.

In Christ,
