Teachings of the Presidents of the Church, Lorenzo Snow“The law of tithing is one the most important ever revealed to man … Through obeying this law the blessings of prosperity and success will be given to the Saints.” – Deseret Evening News, p. 3 June 24, 1899
1 Timothy 6:5, 9-11 “Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.”
Even a rudimentary knowledge of the Bible will tell anyone Mr. Snow’s edict is false based on two reasons –
1.Millions of Mormons have faithfully paid their tithing without prosperity knocking on their door – my mother is a good example of this. Additionally, what about all those in 3rd world countries who pay tithing, and they’re still living in abject poverty?
2.Living in the age of grace, there are no ‘laws’ from the Old Testament era.
It’s easy to see that Mr. Snow’s inspiration came from somewhere other than the Lord. His message was nothing more than a precursor to the modern day word faith movement.
