Role of Mormon Women Then and Now

10 September

Women of Mormondom, p. 541 “Paul, in the egotism of man’s apostleship, commanded, “Let the woman be silent in the church.”

The prophet Joseph corrected Paul, and made woman a voice in the church, and endowed her with an apostolic ministry. The chief faith of the Mormon women concerning themselves is that they are called with a holy calling to raise up a righteous seed unto the Lord a holy nation a people zealous of good works. The Mormon women have a great truth here.”

1 Corinthians 14:34“Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.”

Today’s LDS reference is a classic example of what a typical Mormon thinks about God’s word.

The site GotQuestions.org has provided a great explanation of what Paul meant in 1 Corinthians 14. Here’s what they said –

“At first glance, this seems to be a blanket command that women are never allowed to speak at all in the church. However, earlier in the same epistle (1 Corinthians 11:5), Paul mentions situations where women are allowed to pray and prophesy in the assembled congregation. Therefore, 1 Corinthians 14:33–35 must not be an absolute command for women to remain silent at all times in all services. The prohibition must be limited in some way by the context.

In both 1 Corinthians 11 and 14, Paul is keen to maintain male spiritual leadership in the home and church as a universal principle (see also 1 Timothy 2:12). Pastors and elders are men, and women come under that authority with the rest of the church.”

Pulpit Commentary also said this: ‘Christianity emancipated women, but did not place them on an equality with men. As also saith the Law (Genesis 3:16; Numbers 30:3-12).’

Eliza Snow’s comments are typical of how convoluted the understanding can be regarding scripture. Attacking the messenger (Paul), seemed to be more important than truth.

After getting her insults out of the way, the next order of business was to offer up an ungodly rendition of what God really meant. You’ll notice Ms. Snow didn’t provide any reference for Paul’s exhortation, nor did she take the time to investigate why Paul said what he did. The first thing she provided was Joe Smith’s interpretation.

In short, Smith was Eliza’s god, not the One True God of the Bible.

To be clear, I’d be rue not to mention at one time my attitude reflected Ms. Snow’s. I got up and walked out of the very first bible study I attended when the teacher tried to explain what was being taught in 1st Peter – wives are to submit to their husbands.

From what we’ve seen at LAM over the past 20+ years, this hardness of heart still persists.

The sad part of this whole thing is seen in Ms. Snow’s exhortation. Women have been subjugated to the role of a baby machine, and she refused to see truth. There are no women in the elite leadership of the Church, there are no women apostles, or prophets. Mormon women are tricked into believing their role as mothers is the best way to worship God. In reality, the chief role of all people is to worship God with all our hearts – Mt. 22:36-40.

Pray for those who’ve chosen to listen to Joe, and not Jesus.

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
