America at this time was a nation of laws.  It was more of a republic than it is now.  The government wasn’t babysitting how you worshipped God, but they did react when the law was broken.

The Mormon Church was always finding themselves in trouble with local and the federal government.  They created their own banking system, practiced polygamy, practiced blood atonement, committed arson, declared martial law, committed fraud…this has nothing to do with religious tolerance but everything to do with your every day common criminal behavior.
