Reasons Why God Did Not Ordain Polygamy

Journal of Discourses 11:269; “It is the word of the Lord, and I wish to say to you, and all the world, that if you desire with all your hearts to obtain the blessings which Abraham obtained, you will be polygamists at least in your faith, or you will come short of enjoying the salvation and the glory which Abraham has obtained. […] The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy.” —  Brigham Young, Great Salt Lake, August 19, 1866

Leviticus 18:18, 20; “Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time. 20 Moreover thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbour’s wife, to defile thyself with her.”

Deuteronomy 17:17; “Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.”

We’ve asked it many times, but we’ll keep asking anyway…

Where in the Bible did God command Abraham, or any other man to practice polygamy?

If this is ‘the word of the Lord’ as Brigham claimed, where is it?

Specifically, what blessings did Abraham obtain by practicing polygamy?

What did his so-called blessings mean for the people of early Mormonism, and what do they mean for a Mormon today?

If  you’re LDS, are you aware of Abraham’s true story?

This one story is something that’s not talked a lot about in Mormonism. They don’t teach on the importance of how Abraham became the father of God’s people, and what it means for Christians today.

The real story of Abraham begins in Genesis 15:18 when God promised Abraham He was going to give him, and his seed, the land of promise.

At the time, Abraham had no kids, but that didn’t stop Abraham from taking matters into his own hands by not waiting on God’s promise. At the direction of his wife Sarai (Sarah), he bedded down with Hagar. Genesis 16:2-5.

This whole polygamy story with Abraham was the doing of Sarah and Abraham, not God!! Afterwards, she realized the terrible mistake she made.

Genesis 16:5; “And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.”

Although they fell on their faces laughing, they soon realized God wasn’t joking. Sarah became pregnant at the age of 99, and gave birth to Jacob who was the father of Isaac, the ‘father’ of the nation of Israel.

Hagar’s son, Ishmael, became the thorn in Israel’s side and wasn’t God’s doing at all, rather, it was the scheme of man.
