Questions Mormons ask to draw you into Mormonism, pt 5

Today we’ll be covering questions 9 and 10 of our ongoing series based on the article, ‘51 questions that might lead you to Mormonism’.

Why does Paul say that there are lots of gods? (1 Cor 8:5)

In respect to the Word, and reading it in context, I’d like to extend this portion of scripture to verse 6.

1 Corinthians 8:5-6 “For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.”

The lower case ‘g’ gods Paul is referring to are the Roman, and Greek gods the people worshiped. In that culture, idol worship was part of their lives. However, Deuteronomy 10:17 says –

“For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward.”

While there are false gods that people choose to worship, the one true God is mightier and more powerful than any of them. He is the only one who has the power to save us from our sins and draw us to Him.

“Why do so many of the “Early Christian Fathers” (those that were closest to the New Testament church) and respected Christian scholars such as C.S. Lewis speak of there being multiple gods?”

The author of the article doesn’t give any references to what he’s talking about, so I’ll do my best to answer this question.

Who are the ‘Early Church Fathers’ he’s referring to? No matter what they might have said. it’s not scripture, it’s not God’s word.

Here are a few things He has said about Himself –

Isaiah 45:5-6 “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.”

Isaiah 43:11 “I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.”

Furthermore, as I stated above, depending on their culture, people worshiped idols and false gods, (many still do today) but those gods are no match for the one true God.

Regarding C.S Lewis, he was an author, not a pastor, or theologian, so I’m not sure why it matters what he said. Yet one thing’s for sure, Mormons love to quote him! You can find his quotes in General Conference talks, in Church magazines and the lessons they teach on Sunday. I have no logical reason why this is, if anyone knows tell me.

Even though they deny it, Mormonism is very polytheistic. Judging by the questions in this article, there’s no hiding it. The author is trying to make a false point that other believers, and even God, acknowledged the existence of other gods like God himself.

The thing is, there are no other gods like our God. Instead of trying read things into God’s word that aren’t there, why don’t that try reading it in context? I pray that they do. It’s so much easier to read, and understand the bible without the Mormon filter.

In Christ,

Melissa Grimes
