Today we’ll be covering questions 7 and 8 of our ongoing series based on the article ‘51 questions that might lead you to Mormonism’.

Question 7

“Why do people believe God the Father and Jesus Christ are one being when Christ refers to himself and His Father as two men? (John 8:17-18)”

Okay, I’m not sure what ‘people’ this question is referring to, but let’s take this passage back a few verses to 14 and see what Jesus has said.

John 8:14-18

“Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go. 15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. 17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.”

As a few side notes, you should know that in Mormonism, God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are three individual gods. Also, one of the ways they like to attack Christianity is through our belief in the Trinity.

These verses aren’t proof of the Mormon doctrine regarding Jesus, and the Father are two separate gods. What they are, is proof of Jesus’ knowledge of His origin, and divine destiny, the union between God and His son, and their collective witness of Jesus’ identity.

Question 8

“The first Hebrew word for “God” renders the word “God” in the plural. Is there more than one god?”

While it may be true many people of other religions believe in, and worship false gods, there is only one true God we should be concerned with.

God condemned the worship of these false ‘gods’.

Deuteronomy 6:14 “Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you”.

God has said there is no other God like himself.

Isaiah 45:5-6 “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.”

Isaiah 44:6 Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

As far as Elohim, the word for God being plural –

“Interestingly, the word Elohim is grammatically plural rather than singular (the -im suffix in Hebrew indicates the plural form). The singular form of Elohim is probably Eloah. What are we to make of the plural? Does the plural form of Elohim imply polytheism? No, the Torah makes clear that God is one (Deuteronomy 6:4). Polytheism is expressly forbidden in the Old Testament.” (gotquestions.org)

One thing is for sure, if you spend time around Mormons it won’t take long before they start talking to you about their religion. As they’re explaining things to you, you’ll realize they are doing the same thing Satan did to Eve in the Garden of Eden, and try to make you doubt God and His word.

This is why, as Christians we must know what God has said about Himself, and who He says He is. We must also pray to have the words to say to them when the situation arises, and pray they will be receptive to it.

In Christ,

Melissa Grimes
