Today we’ll be covering questions 11, and 12 of our ongoing series based on the article, ‘51 questions that might lead you to Mormonism’.

“The word “God” is a title. It’s not the actual name of Christ and it’s not the name of Heavenly Father. So could others like you and I be called using that same title someday if we are faithful children of a being with the title of “God”? (John 10:30-36) (Romans 8:16-17)”

No, others like you, or I, can never be called by that name, it doesn’t matter how faithful we are, no, never.

The Mormon teaching that all of us have the ability to continue to progress eternally toward godhood is false. There’s no biblical basis for it. We can become God’s children through Jesus Christ, but we can never become a god.

“Christ tells us to become perfect. God is perfect. Does that mean we can become like God? (Matt 5:48)”

What do you mean ‘like God’? Like God as in creating a universe, and a world by speaking things into existence? No, God is God, and we are not God. God is unique there is no one ‘like’ Him.

Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Here Jesus sets up an unreachable standard. It summarizes James 2:10

“For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.”

God had to set the bar extremely high, He couldn’t lower it. To do so would compromise His holiness and perfection.

To become ‘like God’ means that you don’t willfully, and knowingly sin against Him. It means that you don’t choose to follow the world because it’s the easier path to take. It means not being afraid to stand up for biblical truth, even when it’s the unpopular thing to do.

Ephesians 1:4 tells us –

“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:”

It’s impossible for us to reach perfection on our own, but Jesus is there to help us, to give us the strength to do all things.

Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

In Christ,

Melissa Grimes
