Polygamy Produced Lies and Living Underground

Journal of Discourses 26:94; “…their bigamy is deception and fraud and a breach of the marriage covenant; while our polygamy, as it is called, is the fulfilling of the marriage covenant, it is honorable and the fruits of it are good; theirs is done clandestinely, ours openly; we acknowledge ours, they repudiate theirs.” – John Taylor, Salt Lake City, February 12, 1882

Deuteronomy 17:17; “Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.”

Granted, bigamy typically involves concealing the truth about one’s marital status. That said, however, there are a few problems with Mr. Taylor’s explanation.

1.Polygamy breaks a marriage covenant by not forsaking all others.

2.Fruits of polygamy are rarely good.

3.Mormon polygamy was not practiced openly in Nauvoo, Ohio, or even Utah. John Taylor moved no less than twenty-two times in two years in order to hide his trail of polygamy.

After delivering his last public speech on Feb 1, 1885, he slipped out a side door, and lived underground until his death in 1887. The link above is for an article  from BYU, giving minute details of how members hid him from the feds, and kept boats ready for quick escapes. Hardly the image of living an open polygamous lifestyle!

The following is an excerpt we found interesting based on their wording –

“Some Latter-day Saints may be surprised to learn that a President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lived a clandestine existence in danger of being imprisoned.”

4.Mr. Taylor qualified himself as a false teacher by preaching lies.

5.How is polygamy honorable when you lie to feds, and run from them?

Ask your Mormon friends what they think of this!

With Love in Christ;
