Polygamy, Mormonism and the one true God

Polygamy and Following Jesus

Journal of Discourses 5:204; Some quietly listen to those who speak against the Lord’s servants, against his anointed, against the plurality of wives, and against almost every principle that God has revealed. Such persons have half-a-dozen devils with them all the time. You might as well deny “Mormonism,” and turn away from it, as to oppose the plurality of wives.” – Heber C. Kimball, October 12, 1856, Salt Lake City

The other day (actually, it happens every day)  I was told by a Mormon that I’m not following the true God.  When he told me this my mind immediately went to the many quotes of faithful Mormon prophets who claimed that if you deny polygamy, you are in essence denying Mormonism.

So I’m wondering…were Wilford Woodruff, Joseph F. Smith and all the other Mormons denying Mormonism when they went along with the US government and stopped practicing polygamy?

And if you don’t practice polygamy anymore, are you denying God as well?  Where is the loyalty to true Mormonism and this so called true God if you’ve given into the US government?

Mormonism says you must follow this god and do what he does, so does the US government’s rules trump this god?
