Heber Chase Kimball   1801-1868

Life of Heber C. Kimball, pg 425; “Thus it will be seen that Heber C. Kimball was the father of sixty-five children—truly a patriarchal household. His wives were noble women, devoted to the Gospel, lovers of home and children, good, friendly, hospitable, hard working and fine neighbors. They were true and faithful to their husband and proved themselves worthy of being the wives of the Great Prophet Heber C. Kimball.” – Orson Whitney

Heber Chase Kimball was born June 14, 1801 in Sheldon, VT and died in June 1868 in Utah from the effects of a carriage accident.

It’s safe to say that not all of Kimball’s wives were true and faithful considering sixteen divorced him and left.  The beliefs and affects of this man’s presence in Mormonism can still be seen and felt today.

He taught on every subject important to the LDS faith and wasn’t shy to express his views when it came to polygamy, non-Mormons and non-whites.  It’s said that he was reluctant to accept Joseph Smith’s teachings on polygamy, but given his track record one can see he heartily embraced it in the end.

Some of his better known quotes reveal his disparaging thoughts about women; “I think no more of taking another wife than I do of buying a cow” and at his wife Vilate’s funeral when he said “There lies a woman who gave me 44 wives”. His devotion to Joseph Smith knew no bounds in the subsequent actions he took by offering to give up his wife Vilate to Joseph Smith and the eventual deliverance of their fourteen year old daughter Helen Mar Kimball in marriage to Smith, ensuring the family a place in heaven.  For all intensive purposes, he sacrificed his own flesh and blood to the demi-god of Mormonism, Joseph Smith.

Speaking of women, he married ten widows of Joseph Smith, one of Hyrum Smith and also married ten teenagers ranging in age of fifteen to nineteen (this doesn’t include his wife Vilate whom he married when they were both sixteen).  As you’ll see in the chart below more than a handful of these marriages were polyandrous in nature. In addition to those we also see five sets of sisters, an aunt and niece duo, as well as a mother and daughter combo. Nothing like keeping it in the family…

If polygamy doesn’t bother you and you’re pro-Mormon Kimball serves as a stalwart in the halls of Mormonism. If however you’re not a fan of the history of Mormon polygamy or Kimball’s obvious disdain for anyone of color, this man’s history would be a problem. Either way, the evidence is what it is and speaks for itself.

1. Vilate Murray –

Vilate’s submission to Smith’s teaching. This is one of the most bizarre diary excerpts from inside the Church on how this woman accepted polygamy; the heartache and depravation to the spirit can only be imagined. Helen Mar Kimball retells the story of how her mother’s vision helped her to accept adultery (polygamy). http://www.moroni10.com/mormon_history/vilate-kimball-vision.html

End Notes:

There are also reports of Kimball being married to Caroline Partridge Young, daughter of Brigham Young and Eliza Partridge.  I found only 2-3 references to this marriage with no corroborating documentation from LDS data sources such as Gedweb or otherwise. References below just mention the union with no further insight.
