One God

One God 2.0As you might imagine, leaving Mormonism comes with a laundry list of new experiences and seemingly never-ending surprises. One of the biggest shocks for me was learning there’s only one God.

For the next few days we’re going to look at some of the key biblical elements of the Trinity that sets Christianity apart from Mormonism. We pray it’ll be a handy reference portal Christians can use when witnessing, and for Mormons who want to know more about the god they worship. Today our subject matter is God. Tomorrow we’ll look at Jesus, and on day three we’re looking at the Holy Spirit.

Our new series will replace/update our existing page entitled God, Jesus & the Holy Spirit of the Bible.

Part one contains a list of around 60 biblical references declaring there is only One God. It leaves no doubt Mormons have removed themselves from the ranks of Christianity. Their own doctrine serves as a damning testimony of who they worship, and what their agenda is all about, that being Joseph Smith.

We wanted to make sure our focus on who God is would be free of any extraneous subject matters so you’ll only find biblical references.  For references about Joseph Smith see our category on him here.

The Lord has provided for us abundantly in life. From the comfort we have in knowing Jesus is our Redeemer to His unchanging word where we can go to for guidance; we are truly blessed! Today we’re looking at the subject of monotheism. The Bible contains numerous passages describing God that can keep anyone busy for quite awhile. What I found so endearing when I became a believer is learning that names actually carry a descriptive meaning and one of the major shocks for me when I left Mormonism was finding out there are no other gods. Man can’t become a god and there wasn’t a council of gods who created the earth as Joseph Smith taught (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p 349).

Today we’re looking at those two subjects.

For the Hebrews a name wasn’t a label as it is in Western culture today, rather, it served to distinguish one person from another. It was the identification of the person himself and determined worth, character, reputation and how much authority you carried. In other words, it meant everything.

Just as names served many purposes, the significance of being born into a certain tribe operated in much the same way. The tribe you were born into determined your lifestyle, marriage, and vocation in life.

This custom also holds true with our Lord. Each one of His names provides us with a description of how He operates and who He is. The Bible tells us that God’s name is a Strong Tower (Pr. 18:10). Since God is obviously not a building, it’s referring to His strength and the safety He provides to His children.

In this article we’ve listed numerous verses telling us there is only ONE God. Not three in one and not ‘one in purpose’ as Mormons like to claim, but just ONE God. Sometimes a verse will denote the meaning of God’s name while clearly showing He is the Only God.

I felt it was important to compile a list of verses showing there is only One God for our sites to use as a handy reference when witnessing to missionaries, friends and loved ones.

By no means is our collection of verses an exhaustive one! I’m sure there are some verses not listed that are your favorites so if you’re a Christian be sure to share your favorites with the Mormon in your life and maybe a few of these will be of help to you.

If you’re LDS we pray that you’ll take this list and check it out for yourself and discover there really is only ONE God. I also encourage you to think about the significance of all these verses. Use a Strong’s Concordance that will give you the transliteration of each key word from the verse. This will provide you with a descriptive explanation of the etymology of the key word and where you can find other verses as well.

If you don’t have your own concordance, you can use online resources for free. I recommend Blue Letter Bible which has ample tools to guide you in your search.

If all these verses have been mistranslated then ask yourself why you’d trust any part of the Bible because these verses all tie into other passages found in God’s word. If these are wrong then the entire Bible would have to be wrong as well.

If on the other hand you find they’ve been translated correctly then by default, Mormonism is the one that’s in the wrong and not the Bible. Know that we’re praying for you and if you want further info don’t hesitate to call or e-mail us!

With Love in Christ;
