Mormonism Says There are No Instant Christians

Acts 1:8, 2:2, 4; “8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Today and tomorrow we’re taking a look at a few teachings from Neal A. Maxwell. The reason why we’re doing this isn’t to pick on him, rather, it’s to call attention to the doctrines this Church upholds.

Mr. Maxwell was an apostle of the LDS Church from 1981 – 2004, and before that time he served on many auxiliary boards within the Church, as well as being a prominent figure in the Utah school system.

The quote we’re highlighting today is part of a speech he gave on the day he was ordained as a member of the ‘Seventy’ in October 1976. The Church so highly regards this man that even a local newspaper provided a fitting analysis of the affection felt in their hearts for him.

“Regarded by many LDS Church members as the faith’s ultimate wordsmith, Elder Maxwell’s public addresses—particularly those during the faith’s semi-annual general conferences—included intricately crafted similes, metaphors and alliteration that cut to the core of the faith’s most basic doctrines.”

Now that we have a fair estimation of this man’s standing within the Church, we can safely surmise that what he says is indeed representative of the Mormon gospel.

Question:

How does the Church explain what Mr. Maxwell said in light of the events that took place on the first Christian Pentecost?
