Mormonism: Dead Relatives Can Visit You

21 March

Gospel Doctrine, pp. 435-436; “When messengers are sent to minister to the inhabitants of this earth, they are not strangers, but from the ranks of our kindred, friends, and fellow beings. Our fathers and mothers, brothers, sisters and friends who have passed away from this earth…bringing messages of love, warning, reproof and instruction, to those whom they had learned to love in the flesh.” – Joseph F. Smith

Luke 16:31; “And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.”

One of the more notable teachings in Mormonism can be seen in their belief about those who’ve passed on in life.

When we lost our daughter Mallory back in ’88, my mother used to call quite often asking if I’d seen her yet. Her calls were preceded by a book she gave to me entitled, ‘Angel Children’, by another Mormon by the name of Mary V. Hill. Her book described the visits she received from her deceased son, Stephen, and mentioned how comforting it was when he’d come to visit.

Wow!

Before I became a Christian, I always wondered where my mother got the notion dead relatives could visit her, and here we see she got it from leaders of the Church. Joseph F. Smith was the 6th prophet/president of the Church.

Be sure to share with the Mormon you know the Bible calls this necromancy, and it has no place in the life of a true believer. My heart breaks whenever I hear my mother tell me she’s visited her relatives at their graves in hopes someone will make an appearance. If you’re a Christian,  your hope is in Christ, not the deceased!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
