Mormonism Broke Its Own Rules with Garment Change

17 May

Improvement Era, Vol. IX, No. 10, p. 813; “The Lord has given unto us garments of the holy priesthood, and you know what that means. And yet there are those of us who mutilate them, in order that we may follow the foolish, vain and (permit me to say) indecent practices of the world. … They should hold these things that God has given unto them sacred, unchanged and unaltered from the very pattern in which God gave them. Let us have the moral courage to stand against the opinions of fashion, and especially where fashion compels us to break a covenant and so commit a grievous sin.” – Joseph Fielding Smith, August 1906

The following quote is listed on our site:

Messages of the First Presidency 5:110; “The Saints should know that the pattern of endowment garments was revealed from Heaven and that the blessings promised in connection with wearing them will not be realized if any unauthorized change is made in their form or in the manner of wearing them.” – President Joseph F. Smith; 28 June 1906.

Colossians 2:20; “Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances”.

Being a Christian entails the simple belief you trust God’s word, and follow the New Testament.

However, in Mormonism there’s an obvious disconnect for the Church when it comes to what the Lord says. There are so many ordinances one could spend an eternity on just one subject matter in trying to unravel their mess.

I’ve limited myself to a couple of the countless teachings doled out on this topic. After spending several days looking at hundreds of quotes and doctrines, it got me nowhere fast – ha! My research stemmed from a post earlier this week. I was certain I remembered the Church had said they couldn’t change the style of garments, yet they did just that with their latest garment update.

The point in this topic is what was said about the garments, vs. what they’re doing today. It’s clear they’re not walking the talk.

If it was a ‘grievous sin’ to change the style in 1906, why isn’t it today? If you’re LDS, what do you think about this? As a Christian, my heart breaks for every Mormon who is encumbered by such a law, after all, Jesus came to set the captives free! Take hold of that freedom beloved, and never look back!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle

    “We are thrilled to be able to offer new garment styles specific to what men have been asking for, like a lower crew neckline and shorter sleeves so they can wear T-shirts without being concerned that their garment tops are showing,” he said. “And the new, snugger-fitting V-neck top provides a slimmer, modern profile.”
