Mormon Terminology: Veil

27 March

Matthew 27:51 “And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.”

The LDS Church has gone out of its way to make a mockery of something in God’s most Holy works. The vail/veil.

It’s one of the key things Christians are most aware of in their walk with Him. Today we’re looking at the Mormon definition of the word veil, and comparing it with what our Lord has said in His word.

As we all know, the veil was rent in two at the death of Jesus, giving us direct access to God. It signified there would no longer be any need for sacrifices, as Jesus’ spilt blood fulfilled the Law. Never again would God reside inside a temple made of hands Acts 17:24.

Before we look at their definition of this important word, let’s see what God has to say!

In the Old Testament the word is spelled vail, and its transliteration is ‘pārōket’. Here’s the full description from Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary —

“feminine active participle of the same as <H6531> (perek); a separatrix, i.e. (the sacred) screen :- vail.”

In the New Testament we see the spelling is veil, and its transliteration is ‘katapetasma’. Here’s what Strong’s says —

‘from a compound of <G2596> (kata) and a congener of <G4072> (petomai); something spread thoroughly, i.e. (special) the door screen (to the Most Holy Place) in the Jewish Temple :- vail.’

There are many good articles to read on the subject of the veil in the OT. One can be found at WhatChristiansWanttoKnow.com, and another at GotQuestions.org. They, and others, along with the Bible reports the veil was 60 feet long, 30 feet wide, and four inches thick. It was made of purple, blue, and scarlet, and interlaced with fine twined linen. It’s said that it took 300 priests to manipulate it, and hung between the Holy of Holies to separate the area where priests offered sacrifices from the rest of the temple. Another curtain hung on the other side of the priestly area, separating it from views of the general public.

For a moment, imagine that curtain being ripped in half the moment Jesus breathed His last. Only God would’ve been able to do such a thing! Although this is but a very brief explanation of the temple veil, we now have a foundation from which to judge truth. Compare this with what the Church said in the LDS Gospel Topics. As an FYI, this is their version of a Bible Dictionary.

Veil

A word used in the scriptures to mean (1) a divider separating areas of the tabernacle or temple, (2) a symbol for a separation between God and man, (3) a thin cloth worn by people to cover their face or head, or (4) a God-given forgetfulness that blocks people’s memories of the premortal existence.

The veil divides the holy of holies from the holy place, Ex. 26:33.

The veil of the temple was rent in twain at the crucifixion of Christ, Matt. 27:51 (Mark 15:38Luke 23:45).

Now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face, 1 Cor. 13:12.

The dark veil of unbelief was being cast away from his mind, Alma 19:6.

The brother of Jared could not be kept from beholding within the veil, Ether 3:19 (Ether 12:19).

The veil shall be rent and you shall see me, D&C 67:10 (D&C 38:8).

The veil of the covering of my temple shall be taken off, D&C 101:23.

The veil was taken from our minds, D&C 110:1.

A veil of darkness shall cover the earth, Moses 7:61.

As we can plainly see, they’ve mixed in a drop of truth with a lot of lies! The references from the Book of Mormon are lies because these aren’t based on truth. References from their Doctrine and Covenants (D&C) are the false prophecies of Joseph Smith, and finally, the reference from the Book of Moses is another lie because it’s from the extra-biblical works produced by Joseph Smith.

God never said He’d cover the earth with a veil of darkness.

God doesn’t live in a temple made of hands as we’ve seen in Acts 17:24 above.

Moreover, man did not live in heaven with God before we were created to live on earth. 1 Cor. 15:44-47.

With Easter coming up, be sure to take a few moments and share the truth with a Mormon you know!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
