Mormon Terminology: Land of Promise

10 June

2 Nephi 1:3; “And he also spake unto them concerning the land of promise, which they had obtained—how merciful the Lord had been in warning us that we should flee out of the land of Jerusalem.”

Genesis 15:18; “To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates.”

Genesis 17:8; “And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”

A few days ago we posted an article on one of Joe Smith’s false prophecies. See ‘False Prophecy #37 of 120 – New Jerusalem in Independence, MO’. The Mormons have always believed the Land of Promise sits squarely on American soil, not the Land of Canaan as the Bible so clearly demonstrates.

Today we’re looking at even more falsehoods authored by Smith when he had Nephi thanking his god for giving them the ‘land of promise’ somewhere in America after fleeing Jerusalem.

While there have also been many Americans who’ve dubbed it as such, the true ‘Land of Promise’ is the Land of Canaan. The Bible verses above clearly mark out the geographical area God gave to Abraham and his descendants.

We’re wondering…

If Independence, MO is the ‘land of promise’ as we noted the other day, and Nephi thanked his god for the land of promise in our reference today, why has the Church had such a difficult time pinpointing the location of where the Nephites lived?

Furthermore, God never told the Israelites to flee Jerusalem during the Babylonian takeover. In fact, He told them to stay put and be taken as prisoners. Jeremiah 42:15-17.
