Mormon Dilemma 80

According to the LDS Church What is a Cult?

In Mormon Doctrine, pgs. 174 & 699, Bruce McConkie defined a cult as “sects”.  Under the sects section it says;See APOSTASY, CHRISTIANITY, CREEDS, FIRST VISION, HARLOTS. Division and dissension, contention, confusion and discord — these are among the prevailing characteristics of the sects of Christendom.”

John 15:17-18; These things I command you, that ye love one another.18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

So is Smith’s first vision part of a cult?  Why would you call Christianity a cult if you claim to be Christian?

When I go to church each Sunday I don’t see the things Mr. McConkie is alleging.  Can there be differences between people who attend a Christian church?  Of course, but as Jesus commanded us to do, we love each other and treat each other with respect.

When I was a Mormon the thought of stepping inside another church horrified me and looking back on it now I can clearly see how I carried on that tradition far too long.

We were so busy calling ourselves Christians while shunning and looking down our noses at the true Christian churches that we didn’t notice we were doing the very thing Jesus told us not to do.

(how I carried on that tradition far too)

I have found that there are many in the LDS Church that think what outsiders say about us is what we really are.

I would say you learned the teachings of the outsiders better then you learned what is really taught by God through his Church here on earth.

    From dictionary.com
    Cult
    1. a particular system of religious worship, especially with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
    2. an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, especially as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
    3. the object of such devotion.
    4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
    5. Sociology. a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.
In the Thesaurus section it lists Church and Religion as synonyms of the word Cult.

All of Christianity is a cult, and every sect or denomination is a cult. We are all cults, including the LDS. I have no problem with this.
Now, in the modern day, after several small fanatical groups have risen up and been destroyed, and so on, the term has become directly associated with this type of group. However, the term itself does not mean only this kind of group.
Now, we are nothing like the fanatical groups that the term is most often associated with, with is what most people what to portray us as. But we are a cult, as being such simply means you are in a group with shared beliefs and practices.
