Ancestor Worship

“Generations Linked in Love,” Ensign, May 2010, 92; “Consider the spiritual connections that are formed when a young woman helps her grandmother enter family information into a computer or when a young man sees the name of his great-grandfather on a census record. When our hearts turn to our ancestors, something changes inside us. We feel part of something greater than ourselves. Our inborn yearnings for family connections are fulfilled when we are linked to our ancestors through sacred ordinances of the temple.” – Russell M. Nelson

Ezekiel 18:2-4; “What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge? 3 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. 4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.”

Hebrews 9:27; “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”

Nowhere does the Bible suggest or teach that we can act on behalf of deceased relatives to earn their salvation.

While finding out who your great grandparents were and what they did in life can be interesting and sometimes even fun we need to be careful and know where to draw the line. Understanding why Suzy has red hair is one thing, believing genealogy work is one way to earn your ticket to heaven is quite another.

Jesus was also quite clear in His explanation to the Sadducees of why people aren’t married in heaven in Mark 12:18-26. He reminded them that God isn’t the God of the dead, but of the living and also told them that after you die you’re like angels in heaven.

This whole thing with genealogy work is but a ruse to take your focus off the Bible. They’ll come up with anything to keep members so busy they have little time for anything else.
