Mormon Dilemma 36

28 July

Mormon Belief

Newsweek, “What Mormons Believe,” September 1, 1980, p. 68; Mormon doctrine means that ultimately we are not dependent upon God for our existence. And since we can make ourselves as godly as the Father, we don’t feel any jealousy toward him.” – BYU Professor James E. Ford

2 Tim. 2:16; But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Every time I think I’ve found the most blasphemous teaching of the Mormon Church, another rears its ugly head.  How very, very sad to have placed your hope in a religion that doesn’t even need God and then still call yourself a Christian.

When did anyone say we didn’t need God? This is never stated anywhere in the quotes given.

Please stop trying to pass off your twisted misrepresentations as LDS doctrine.

    2 Nephi 2: 13
“And if ye shall say there is no law, ye shall also say there is no sin. If ye shall say there is no sin, ye shall also say there is no righteousness. And if there be no righteousness there be no happiness. And if there be no righteousness nor happiness there be no punishment nor misery. And if these things are not there is no God. And if there is no God we are not, neither the earth; for there could have been no creation of things, neither to act nor to be acted upon; wherefore, all things must have vanished away.”

Anyone who claims that we do not need God, or that the LDS teach this, is a liar.

The quote from the BYU professor says “we are not dependent upon God for our existence”.

    Please explain…

First of all, he is a professor, not a church leader, so what he says is not doctrine.

However, the idea that we are not dependent on God for our existence, which is true, does not mean we do not need God.
We are all eternal beings, having existed as individual entities just as long as God has. We began is simply intelligence, which was then born into spirit bodies of children of God. We are now mortal, and will be immortal, with the worthy being glorified. However, our existence, our individuality and identity, were not created by God, and are thus not dependent on him.
This being said, we still need God. First, the intelligence can only receive a spirit body if it is born to divine parents. Also, as a spirit we had not the power to make ourselves physical and thus mortal. That takes the power of God. When we die we are dependent on the power of the divine to ensure the resurrection and attain immortality. After this we are still dependent on God to glorify us in heaven. To make this possible we needed to be redeemed, and thus we needed Christ (God) to perform the atonement.

To say that we are not dependent on God for our existence is true, but it does not mean we do not need him, for without God we would never progress beyond mere intelligence.

“To say that we are not dependent on God for our existence is true,”

Are you kidding me Shem? Really? Every breath you take is a gift from God, make no mistake you are dependent on Him. – Melissa Grimes

Sounds kinda like science fiction mixed with Greek mythology to me… with a little bit of New Age belief on the side.

Every breath I take is a gift from God, and I am dependent on him. I never once said I wasn’t. This is just you once again trying to twist my words to fit your preconceived ideas.
Every breath I take is a gift from God, for it is by his power that I was born into this body that breaths, and by his power that I remain in it. This does not mean that the entity that is me is created by God, only that this current form of it is created and sustained by God.

    Camden

All true science will agree with true religion, and all mythology is just degenerate forms of the original religion taught to Adam. As such I am not surprised that the truth carried similarities or familiarities with these areas.
