Mormon Dilemma 276

Seer is Greater than a Prophet (Oh how wonderful Joseph Smith is!)

Mosiah 8:17; “But a seer can know of things which are past, and also of things which are to come, and by them shall all things be revealed, or, rather, shall secret things be made manifest, and hidden things shall come to light, and things which are not known shall be made known by them, and also things shall be made known by them which otherwise could not be known.”

Deut. 18:20-22; “But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. 21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? 22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.”

If the Nephites had to hammer their messages into plates of brass and gold how feasible would it be to say what this Mosiah character did in the passage today?

And what purpose does this verse serve for the average member of the Church today, i.e. my mother?  Does this sound like something they could turn to for comfort in their life?

This verse serves no other purpose than to laud the praises of Joseph Smith in the 1830’s.  It was a message from the Mormon god to tell people that Smith was supposedly greater than Moses or Isaiah or Elijah, and even Jesus Himself.

In Hebrew the word for seer is raòaòh and can be found in the Bible 28 times – all in the Old Testament.

Meanwhile, back to living in the New Testament times we don’t see it used at all…hmmm…what does that say for Mr. Smith?

Easton’s Bible Dictionary describes “seer” this way:

A primitive root; to see, literally or figuratively (in numerous applications, direct and implied, transitively, intransitively and causatively):—advise self, appear, approve, behold, X certainly, consider, discern, (make to) enjoy, have experience, gaze, take heed, X indeed, X joyfully, lo, look (on, one another, one on another, one upon another, out, up, upon), mark, meet, X be near, perceive, present, provide, regard, (have) respect, (fore-, cause to, let) see (-r, -m, one another), shew (self), X sight of others, (e-) spy, stare, X surely, X think, view, visions.

It’s interesting to note that it didn’t mention seers are better than prophets…
