Mormon Dilemma 261

Secret Societies

Evidences & Reconciliations, pg 282; “The Church ever operates in full light. There is no secrecy about its doctrine, aim, or work. It is open to all men who will conform to its requirements. Access to the temples, where the most sacred ordinances are performed, may be had by every member of the Church who lives the honorable life expected of faithful Latter-day Saints.”

Matthew 5:33-34; “Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne.”

I’m wondering how the Church answers to this section of scripture.  The oaths that are taken by members of the Church as they go through the temple rituals have been toned down over the years but don’t let that confuse you.  By participating in the temple you are taking those oaths unto yourself even if you didn’t actually speak the words aloud.  You’ve affirmed that you are in agreement with what was being said and you’ve taken that spirit of avenging the Church and the Mormon god upon your soul.

Here’s a list of the ceremonies and oaths taken in the temples:

(I’m wondering how the Church answers to this section of scripture. The oaths that are taken by members of the Church …)

You have created something that is not there. By using the word “oath” to replace what really happens, you make the uninformed think we do something we do not.

Read the rest of the idea in the partial scripture you used and you will see what we truly do.

We follow verse 37, we say yes or no.

Yes or no answers, but no oath swearing.

¶ Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:
35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
    (New Testament | Matthew 5:33–37‎)‎

So by saying, “yes”, then, “You’ve affirmed that you are in agreement with what was being said and you’ve taken that spirit of avenging the Church and the Mormon god upon your soul.  ”
After you affirmed, you’ve in essence become a partner with Lucifer by affirming.

(…and you’ve taken that spirit of avenging the Church and the Mormon god upon your soul.)

I remember making promises about how I would behave and I do not understand where you get the idea that I would “avenge” anything.

I think you have bought a load of some smelly stuff if you buy into the idea of “spirit of avenging the Church and the Mormon god”; the Temple training is about the relationship of the person in the Temple and our Heavenly Father.

Could you point me to where you got that bogus idea? I would like to see how it is justified.
