Sin Not an Attribute of Man

Journal of Discourses 10:251-252; “I wish you to understand that sin is not an attribute in the nature of man, but it is an inversion of the attributes God has placed in him. Righteousness tends to an eternal duration of organized intelligence, while sin bringeth to pass their dissolution.” – Brigham Young

Romans 3:23; “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”.

Whenever I see the LDS quote above I wonder what the Lord’s reaction would be to that statement. I’ve also wondered what they think of the two year old who throws temper tantrums.

Parents spend countless hours raising kids to do good things and be decent members of society, but I never had to teach my kids how to lie or pitch a fit. Somehow they came up with those attributes all on their own.

The entire reason we are separated from God is because of sin. Our sin nature is the very thing we fight internally throughout life. Thank God He loves us and knows exactly what we need to endure this life!

First He gave the sacrifice needed to pay for our sin. Can you imagine giving your child for the sin of others when you’ve done no wrong? I’ve lost a child and have to say that I know I wouldn’t give up my child for someone who was undeserving. My human nature in me isn’t that loving.

And if that wasn’t enough God went even further with the indwelling of His Holy Spirit to guide us throughout life and provide a Comforter when we’re lonely, sad, and happy, at peace…His love just never ends!

This is one of the most important parts of being a Christian and something I know people like my mother don’t understand. My heart is so sad for her whenever she calls and is distraught over the big and small things in life. For the Mormon the Holy Ghost only sticks around if you’re living righteously enough to earn his presence.
