Marriage Laws

27 June

From the Church’s website today I found the following statement:

“Church Responds to Supreme Court Marriage Rulings

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released the following statement today regarding the decisions announced by the United States Supreme Court on cases involving marriage:

“By ruling that supporters of Proposition 8 lacked standing to bring this case to court, the Supreme Court has highlighted troubling questions about how our democratic and judicial system operates. Many Californians will wonder if there is something fundamentally wrong when their government will not defend or protect a popular vote that reflects the views of a majority of their citizens.
“In addition, the effect of the ruling is to raise further complex jurisdictional issues that will need to be resolved.
“Regardless of the court decision, the Church remains irrevocably committed to strengthening traditional marriage between a man and a woman, which for thousands of years has proven to be the best environment for nurturing children. Notably, the court decision does not change the definition of marriage in nearly three-fourths of the states.””

First off I’m not in favor of changing the marriage laws and I certainly don’t know why the Court thinks it’s okay for them to redefine the meaning for marriage, but now the statement on the LDS’ website has given me pause…

Why the sudden concern about the constitutional laws of the US regarding marriage?  It wasn’t all that long ago the Church fought vigorously for the right to marry whom they saw fit and felt the US Government had overstepped its boundaries by enforcing the Anti-Bigamy laws.

When you think about it the Supreme Court’s ruling yesterday could favor the plight of Joseph Smith’s argument for polygamy.  It also opened the door for God only knows what to come traipsing through.

Furthermore, their statement “…traditional marriage…for thousands of years has proven to be the best environment for nurturing children…” contradicts previous teachings of polygamy being the best arena for raising kids.

The Mormon church just can’t help from contradicting itself in everything they say and do. In the heyday of Mormon polygamy we find Brigham Young’s philosophy to be quite different from what we read above;

Polygamy Produces Robust Children

Journal of Discourses 13:317; “Talk about polygamy! There is no true philosopher on the face of the earth but what will admit that such a system, properly carried out according to the order of heaven, is far superior to monogamy for the raising of healthy, robust children! A person possessing a moderate knowledge of physiology, or who has paid attention to his own nature and the nature of the gentler sex, can readily understand this.” – Brigham Young, Ogden City, November, 13, 1870

It’ll be interesting to see how deep those pockets are this time around when the issue will certainly be looked upon again with Prop 8 in California.
