Living Above the Law

13 April

Journal of Discourses 1:361; “If I had forty wives in the United States, they did not know it, and could not substantiate it, neither did I ask any lawyer, judge, or magistrate for them. I live above the law, and so do this people.” –– Brigham Young, Great Salt Lake City, August 1, 1852

Deuteronomy 17:17;“Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away…”

So much for obeying the Lord, not to mention their 12th Article of Faith!

“We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.”

Brigham’s comment gives us a bird’s-eye view into what it was like for members in the early days of Utah Mormonism. Brigham made the rules. You obeyed. End of story.

Unfortunately, the leadership in Mormonism still carries on in the very same fashion as it did with Brigham. We see this in the mandatory ‘follow the prophet’ reminders found in every Mormon talk today.

The only difference between then and now, is the absence of polygamy. It’s kind of like what we saw in the post yesterday with Paul visiting the Greeks who were worshiping multiple gods. Not a lot has changed over time.

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
