Life’s Short, Marry Early!

17 August

The Contributor, Vol. 14, No. 9, p.460 “…it is not possible for a man to obtain salvation and exaltation without marriage, holy and eternal.

There should be created a sentiment and a faith in the hearts of all young Latter-day Saints in this principle and early marriages, because life is short. If we run out the three score years and ten allotted to man it is only a brief span, and we ought to commence our married life at a proper age. All men and women, I understand, should be married at least before they are twenty- four years of age.” – Francis M. Lyman, June 4, 1893
Psalm 90:10 “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.”

Oh dear…what a tangled web we weave…

How is it they’ve believed this one particular bible verse, and have rejected everything else? Of course there’s nothing wrong with this verse, mind you, but it’s merely an example of the average lifespan. Why do they reject Mark 12:25 when Jesus told the Sadducees there are no marriages in heaven?

Secondly, why the push to get these young people married? What if they haven’t met ‘the one’ yet? What if they don’t want to get married, then what? While I realize it was the end of the 19th century, the same scriptures applied then, just as they do today.

Last but not least, where’s Jesus in all this? Did Jesus tell people they have to get married? No! Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life…’ (John 4:24). If we have to get married, why did He die on the cross?

It’s been 125 years since Mr. Lyman delivered that speech, and sadly, everything is still the same.

With Love in Christ;
