LDS Temples

11 November

The number of LDS temples is extensive and should be taken seriously when we’re praying for those who are lost in the web of Mormonism.  The talk of temples was part of the focus at the last General Conference in October 2011 so we thought it’d be a good idea to list those here and share with you what a couple of the Mormon leaders had to say about their temples.

We’re asking our readers to look at the list for the closest temple near you and pray for the people that visit the temple in your geographical area.  Also pick out a temple that isn’t close to you and pray for that one as well.  Pray for your schools, the Mormon and non-Mormon children that will surely interact with each other and pray God will tear down the walls of lies put up by the evil one.

Let us know which temples you’ve chosen to pray for and we’ll post all the cities we come up with!  This is a great way to actually see God at work and is encouraging to see God at work in our hearts and lives!

The number of temples has more than tripled since 1990.  As of August 2011 there were 135 temples in operation with another 15 under construction.  In addition to that there are also 16 more temples under consideration of future builds and 6 more recently proposed, bringing the total to 172.

Mormon prophet Thomas Monson told the audience in the conference;

No Church-built facility is more important than a temple,” explained President Thomas S. Monson in announcing plans for six new temples. “Temples are places where relationships are sealed together to last through the eternities.

For the Mormon there is no true salvation without going through the temple and taking the sacred oaths.  Without the temple there is no godhood or forever families in heaven.

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 1444;

The ordinances performed only in the temple are baptisms for the dead, washings and anointings, endowments, and marriages or sealings for eternity. The privilege of entering the House of the Lord, the temple, and participating in its ordinances is a spiritual apex of LDS religious life…Temple ordinances are instruments of spiritual rebirth. In the words of President David O. McKay, they are the “step-by-step ascent into the eternal presence.” Through them, and only through them, the powers of godliness are granted to men in the flesh (D&C 84:20-22).

In 2008, first counselor of the Relief Society, Silvia H. Allred, told readers of the Liahona and Ensign magazines how essential it is for members to be found worthy so they could enter the temple and do their works and “enjoy the blessings” of going to the temple.

“The temple is the house of the Lord. He directs the conditions under which it may be used, the ordinances that should be administered, and the standards that qualify us to enter. … Personal worthiness is an essential requirement to enjoy the blessings of the temple. We prepare by obeying the commandments and seeking to do God’s will” (“Holy Temples, Sacred Covenants,” Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2008, 113).

Sadly, less than ten percent of Mormons will ever qualify or live righteously enough to enter those temples to perform works for the dead or to having sealing ordinances performed for their families.  My mother is one of the majority of Mormons who will never step foot in a temple even though she dutifully pays the ten percent of her gross income and serves as a home teacher.  Why you ask?  My mother’s not married to an active Mormon and this fact disqualifies her from participation.  My heart breaks for her in the constant tug of war she lives through each day of her life.

Believing she loves Jesus and wanting to serve and please him, she lives on that proverbial hamster wheel of never getting to her goal because her works aren’t ever enough to please the god of Mormonism.  She is always, and I do mean always, exhausted.  I recall that at my brother Phil’s funeral in 1992 she and one of her cousins stood in a corner of the funeral parlor making arrangements for him to do Phil’s temple work a year later because she had no temple recommend.

When I think of Mormonism, that scenario plays through my mind every time.  The endless works, the secret not sacred oaths, the Masonic emblems etched in stone that have occultic meanings behind them and my mother’s tired face are all hallmarks of this works for salvation religion.

Sadly the untrue remarks made by LDS leaders give members a false sense of security.  One of the General Authorities, Gary Stevenson said;

“You are never lost when you can see the temple. The temple will provide direction for you and your family in a world filled with chaos. It is an eternal guidepost which will help you from getting lost in the ‘mist of darkness.'”

What about Jesus?  What about His promise of the Holy Spirit who will guide you when you’ve accepted God’s Son into your heart?  John 14:14-18, 23-27.

And what about the words of Luke in Acts 7:48 and 17:24; do they not mean anything?

Now these examples are but just a few from the Bible that tells us God doesn’t live inside manmade buildings today, rather He lives inside the believer!  Are all of these verses and passages mistranslated?

And interestingly enough I found a false prophecy on the Church’s official website giving a list of all the temples.  The very first temple they list on this site is Independence, Missouri.

There is no temple in Independence and never has been. Joseph Smith claimed that God commanded them to build a temple there, but no such temple was ever built and to date (November 10, 2011) the only thing on that piece of property is a plaque in the ground resembling that of a gravestone, marking the place where the temple was supposed to be built.  They refer to this as the “Temple Lot”.

The third temple they list is the Far West Temple in Kansas City.  Again, no temple was ever built.

The fourth temple listed is Adam-ondi-Ahman located in Spring Hill, Missouri.  They believe this is where Adam was kicked out of the Garden of Eden.  Again no temple is on that site.

Please, continue to pray for the Mormon people.  I’m still convinced they love Jesus and have been misled.  They are indeed worshipping another (false) christ.  Matthew 24:24.

    Another wonderful post, just wanted to offer you encouragement and let you know for every prideful, angry, hurting Mormon attacking you for revealing the truth– there is a healing exmormon like me praising our loving God for your ministry! I will begin lifting temples I have entered or visited and their surrounding attending members up in prayer: Idaho Falls, ID. Logan, UT. SLC, UT. Oahu, HI. Mesa, AZ. I pray nightly for our people to find freedom in Christ and feel deeply compelled to pray for these temple districts. Please add them to your list of mormon temples being lifted in prayer! I am so blessed to be a member of the body of Christ now and be one of His eartly temples, that He promised were not built be hands of man. Praise the Lord! =D

    Thank you and bless you my friend! Be watching for the chart that we’re putting together sometime in the next couple of days. 🙂 It’s an amazing journey when you know the Lord and finding how much He loves you puts everything into perspective!

    My mother is one of the majority of Mormons who will never step foot in a temple even though she dutifully pays the ten percent of her gross income and serves as a home teacher. Why you ask? My mother’s not married to an active Mormon and this fact disqualifies her from participation.

    This statement is incorrect. Your mother would be a visiting teacher, and participation in temple activities are done by single members on a regular basis. One does not have to be married to participate. You don’t mention if her husband (your father?) is a member. If he is not then yes, she is sad to know that her marriage is only valid on earth, and is nulled when one dies.

    I don’t believe your mothers “works” are keeping her from the temple. When she is ready for herself, she will attend.

    But kudos to the twist of words of “secret not sacred.” There isn’t anything secret about the temple. If there was, you wouldn’t know so much about it.

      As an FYI to this –

      My mother is married to a man (not my father) who is not LDS. So while you make insinuations and accusations of how wrong I am I wanted to let our readers know why my mother isn’t good enough for the Mormon god even though she gives him ten percent of her money, is a home teacher, makes meals and deserts for those in the ward (congregation), is a full time care taker of my grandmother and niece…the list just goes on and on.
      She can’t go to the temple because she’s not married to a Mormon. How’s that for a loving god?
      This whole thing is just so pathetically sad Dana. How many things are you required to do so you can go to heaven and how much blood does Jesus need to shed? Was His sacrifice not good enough?
      Were praying for you and all Mormons to come to the realization that Jesus already did the work.

      With Love in Christ;
      Michelle

      Again you’re information is wrong Michelle….but that is ok….you can lead a horse to water but not make him drink….Just a clarification, your mother is a “visiting teacher” (“home teachers” are men that hold the priesthood and visit the family, while a “visiting teacher” visits just the women,) and single people go to the temple ALL the time, you do not need to be married to do so; if that was the case we would have a LOT of 19 year old missionaries out there not supporting their families, which obviously is not the case; and an FYI, my best friend is married to a “non” member and she attends the temple twice a month. You think you know “All about it” when you are misinformed….clearly.

      Let me make this clear, there is but one God and one Jesus Christ; while they are there for all the children of God, they do not belong to just one religious belief, how you choose to worship them is an individual’s choice. We will all be judged accordingly and how we treat one another, and only they are allowed to judge if you believe in them or not, it is not up to you. They have made it abundantly clear that they love us all, regardless of religion. God is of course, our Heavenly Father and hopes as all fathers do, that his children will get along, which is partly why he sent our elder brother, Jesus Christ to teach us by example and to tell us to love one another.

      You’re right though, it is pathetically sad Michelle. What is sad is that there are so many talking negatively and concentrating on praying for the “misguided Mormon” when they should be actually working on their own salvation. This site isn’t the most positive that I’ve visited, with the exception of Camden, but I can tell you that last year when I posted the previous comment to yours, I had been questioning my beliefs, I can assure you, you (and others) made me see the light because you were willing to post something so negative; I’ve never, ever, read such comments or blatant disregard of a religion coming from the LDS. They do seem to set a higher standard and regard for others. I think it’s a little funny though that you comment nearly one year later, it seems the Lord needed to remind me again about what is true, what isn’t, and how to find forgiveness for those that like to stir the pot so to speak. Thank you for that. Blessings come in many forms and from the least likely places.

      Might I suggest that if you can’t support your mother and her decision with her life, than let it go, (not her of course), I’m sure she is doing the same for you. But I must tell you, if your mother has a testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, you will never change how she believes.When she is ready for herself, I’m positive that she will attend the temple and many will be on hand to be with her on such a special occasion.

      Please feel free to pray for me and all the rest of the Latter Day Saints, we all appreciate gesture and all the prayers that are offered in our behalf; I will likewise return the favor for you.

      Have a wonderful day.

    Dana – So many people know about the “secret oaths” because they are ex-Mormons who have been through the ordinances. They were there first hand wearing the funny hats and little aprons promising not to reveal the contents of the rituals, for fear of death.

    The only temples ever “commisioned and designed” by God were the “Tent of Meeting” or “Tabernacle” in the desert and Solomon’s Temple. Those temples were designed for the sacrificing of animals for the cleansing of sins for the Jewish people. (of course King Herod re-built the temple around the time of Jesus, but that was Herod’s doing, not God’s)

    Christ came and paid the ulitmate price on the cross to do away with temple sacrifices and rituals once and for all. The veil was torn from top to bottom after He said, “It is finished”

    I probably don’t have to describe the Jewish temple to you with the outer court, Holy Place and Holy of Hollies. The design and purpose of the original temple in no way reflects the design and purpose of the LDS temples. There is no need for any type of temple today, thanks be to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

    In case you were wondering, yes I have been to the L.A. temple twice… with a recomend from the Bishop of the ward I was in at the time.

      Camden,
      Thank you for your reply, I had figured you had already been to the temple, but now sad to read your words. I’m not silly enough to not understand that many have left the LDS religion for one reason or another, and have been so bitter as to tell people their most sacred principles. I merely pointed out that it isn’t secret, but sacred. I believe that much because things that are sacred are rarely discussed in normal everyday conversations. Just because they aren’t discussed doesn’t make them secret. I have sat on the fence post in regards of going to the temple for many years and for that matter attend church. I do not put myself in a situation where I make a promise and then decide afterwards that I didn’t want to do it anymore. I have found that researching what I need to know helps me. As for “fear of death” for revealing these sacred ordinances, I will find out if this is true. The words people use on the sites against Mormons has lead me to believe that they may have something to their religion that obviously strikes a nerve in others. I have yet to figure out why? Again, thank you for your reply.

    Dana – Thank you for replying to my reply 🙂

    I just want to make sure that you (and anybody that reads this blog) know that I have no animosity towards the members of the LDS church…. my whole family are still members of the church (except my little brother). I just want to make sure that the people that are in Mormonism know the whole truth as it relates to the Bible.

    I was not told the whole truth growing up, I was born into the church and it was all I had ever known. I grew up feeling arrogant and superior to other people because I was told by both my family and the church that we were the only ones that were going to be in the presence of God when we died. (if we stayed members of the the LDS church and performed the various works required to reach the Celestial Kingdom)

    I also grew up laughing at the “N-word” jokes that all my family members told at home, at church, and around the Boy Scout campires. I grew up to be a racist towards non-white people. My family members to this day still refer to them as… well, just insert any racist term you want for “African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American (Lamanite?), etc.

    The following is part of my conversion story…

    I was dating my wife at the time and she was hanging out with me at my grandma’s house one afternoon. My grandmother had a couple of extra rooms and the church was paying her to house a couple of pairs of missionaries. Well one of the pairs showed up and we all started talking. She started asking the elders about some of the “strange and anti-biblical” teachings that the Mormon Church had. (Funny thing is that she found out about the strange teachings from a friend at work that was a Jehovah’s Witness) Things like polygamy, exclusion of blacks, Jesus and Satan brothers, God was once a man, etc. I sat there and explained with the missionaries all the stock answers I had learned while growing up;

    “The church started polygamy because the President of the U.S. during the 1840’s, while the Salt Lake bound Mormons were on their handcart trek, “ordered” close to 2,000 Mormon men to leave the trail and head down to help fight in the Mexican/American War. Thus, the older men who couldn’t fight stayed behind. Since the women left behind far outnumbered the men, the older men took the women in to care and provide for them. There weren’t any sexual relations between them; the older men just cared for them and their children with shelter, clothing, and food”.

    Yes folks, that is what I was taught growing up… and as Paul Harvey would say, “Now for the rest of the story”. I later found out that Joseph Smith practiced polygamy long before they even considered moving to Utah. That Brigham Young stated that “men couldn’t become Gods unless they entered into polygamy”, and the Mormon church fought against the United States regarding plural marriage but only caved in so they could get statehood (Utah). I guess that I had heard the “shortage of men” story given to non-Mormons so many times, that it was what I believed as fact. I believe Hitler coined the phrase, “if you tell a lie big enough and often enough… people will eventually believe it as fact”. So the elders and I went through close to 30 minutes of explanations and doctrines. I looked back on it later and it seemed like we were “ganging up” on her. Well the missionaries had an appointment so they had to leave. Once they left she asked me THE question,
    “Are you a Mormon, I mean is that the religion you are going to practice the rest of your life”?
    I shrugged it off and said, “No, not really. I am just taking my grandma there because she can’t drive”. (Deep down inside I felt that I would eventually “get my act together” and do all the things “good” Mormons are supposed to do and continue on in the church.)
    To which she replied, “Okay… cause if you are going to practice Mormonism, we may as well end this relationship right now”.
    Stunned I replied, “What?! Why would you say that?!”
    She answered, “I am looking to get married someday and I don’t want to waste my time dating you if you are going to practice Mormonism, because I will not be unequally yoked with a non-believer”.
    I said, “What do you mean”?!? (Nobody had ever said that to me before. I was taught that being unequally yoked meant a white member marrying an African-American… well before 1978, of course).
    She said, “Everything you guys just told me is so foreign to what I know of the Bible and the way I was raised. You believe things about Jesus and God that are not in the Bible, and I heard that polygamy was just that, guys marrying more than one woman and having children with them…

    Why don’t you come to Church with me this Sunday”?

    I agreed and we went to the Christian church there in our town. The pastor wasn’t even there to give the message, one of the elders from the church was filling in for the first time. The sermon message that morning was on those wonderful verses found in Ephesians chapter 2, verses 8 and 9…

    “For by grace we are saved through faith; and that not of ourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast”.

    It is hard to describe the liberating feeling I had upon hearing that verse, like a yoke had been lifted off my shoulders. That wasn’t taught to me growing up in the Mormon religion. They are all about working their way to the highest level of heaven (the Celestial Kingdom).

    Upon hearing that message from Ephesians it was like the Holy Spirit reached into my chest and gave my heart “a little squeeze” as to soften my hardened heart. I had to investigate this “Biblical Christianity” thing right then and there…

    I gave my heart to Jesus and asked Him for forgiveness. I said that I would take up my cross and follow Him… I learned that “the Church” is the body of believers and that no organization or certain religion can save you. It is only through a real relationship with Jesus Christ…

    There is Hope and Freedom in a relationship with Jesus… He is our Rock and our Salvation. He built His church on that fact, and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it!!!

    One fascinating doctrine in the LDS Church is that ALL people who have ever lived on this planet are eligible to return to Christ. Baptism for the dead is the way this is accomplished. Anyone who has ever taken a breath will be given a chance to accept Christ, which is clearly in accordance with His gospel (and when I say “taken a breath”, I don’t mean to place any limit on God’s intentions). Those that claim Temple ordinances are a false work need to ask themselves “Wouldn’t a loving God give ALL people a way to choose to return to Him?”. Whether they make that choice in this life or in the “life after” depends on the Age of Man in which they lived. Simple yet beautiful.
