LDS Sunday School OT Lesson 34

31 March

old-testament-gospel-doctrine-teachers-manual-355700001The name of this week’s lesson was “I Will Betroth Thee unto Me in Righteousness” and it focuses on Hosea’s marriage to his adulterous wife Gomer to compare it with the idolatrous behavior of Israel.

The teacher is instructed to ask members on several occasions to explain what Israel was doing wrong and then compares all this with the way we reject Christ today.  Wow, if this isn’t rich I don’t know what is.

The lesson asked “Who or what were Israel’s lovers” and of course their answer is that Israel worshiped false gods and listened to others.

Little red flags should be flying around at this stage, alas; they plow through their lesson with a determined blindness they can’t forsake.

May I interject with the suggestion “others”, aka Joseph Smith, and false gods, aka the Mormon godhead, all fit squarely into that package?

The lesson carried on with pointing out what God said about His heart turning inward in Hosea 11:7-9 and told members verse 8 is a wrong interpretation so they should use the Joseph Smith Translation of verse 8 which says;

“How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned toward me, my repentings are kindled together”.

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding!  Red flag warning!!!!  Idols, others, idolatry!  Oh please open your eyeballs!  Look at what’s going on here! The Hebrew word ‘inward’ in Hosea 11:8 is haphak, which means tumbled about, turned upside down, etc.

God is grieved!

Hosea 11:7-9 says;

“And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him. 8 How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together. 9 I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city.”

Changing this word confuses the meaning of the sentence!

God arranged for you, the Mormon, to have access to these lessons and be in that class so He could reveal His truth to you! I’m begging and pleading with you to pause for a moment and think upon this.

The teachers then remind the class to stay faithful to God in obedience right after they explored Hosea 6:6 which says;

“I desired mercy, and not sacrifice”

Here’s what the manual says and I end with asking you pray for the Mormons who will be in that class.

 “Testify that while the Lord’s blessings are reserved for those who keep his commandments, his love is constant and extended to all. Even when we turn away from him through sin, the Lord loves us and wants us to repent and return to him. Encourage class members to be faithful to the Lord.”

In other words if you’re not paying a full tithe, going to church every week, fulfilling your calling, storing food, having babies, going to all your meetings during the week, having family home meetings every Monday night and obeying the prophet with no questions asked, you will not be blessed.

Hosea 6:6 said God wants mercy not sacrifice and 11:9 says He doesn’t change.  Sadly, two of the most important verses in that book are run over like a steam roller and totally ignored.

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
