LDS Sunday School OT Lesson 29

26 March

old-testament-gospel-doctrine-teachers-manual-355700001The name of this week’s lesson is “He Took Up the Mantle of Elijah” and it centers on the story of when Elisha took Elijah’s mantle to become God’s prophet for Israel.  The lesson focuses on what Mormons can do to increase their willingness to follow the counsel of Church leaders and the instructors are told to testify the president of the Church is a prophet just as Elisha was.

2 Kings 2-6 is used for their format in describing the miracles Elisha performed through the Lord, but members are cautioned that miracles like that don’t happen today. They were also told of the time Elijah was caught up in the whirlwind and how Elisha had to keep reminding people it was God’s doing.  Well, at least they got that part right!

The problems in this lesson are many, but we’re only looking at two of these for now.

The first issue is with the LDS teaching about Elijah.  Leaders of Mormonism have taught that Elijah being caught up in the whirlwind and going to heaven is a lie. From the Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p 170 it says;

“Now the doctrine of translation is a power which belongs to this Priesthood. There are many things which belong to the powers of the Priesthood and the keys thereof, that have been kept hid from before the foundation of the world…Many have supposed that the doctrine of translation was a doctrine whereby men were taken immediately into the presence of God, and into an eternal fullness, but this is a mistaken idea. Their place of habitation is that of the terrestrial order, and a place prepared for such characters He held in reserve to be ministering angels unto many planets, and who as yet have not entered into so great a fullness as those who are resurrected from the dead. “Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.” (See Hebrews 11:35.)”

Oh my.  Apparently the prophet Elijah is now an angel on another planet.

The second problem is the teaching to follow the prophet at all costs.  At their General Conference in October 1960 (pg 78) their apostle Marion Romney declared;

“My boy, you always keep your eye on the President of the Church, and if he ever tells you to do anything, and it is wrong, and you do it, the Lord will bless you for it.” Then with a twinkle in his eye, he said, “But you don’t need to worry. The Lord will never let his mouthpiece lead the people astray.””

Where in the Bible does God ever tell us to listen to mankind when they’re wrong and He’ll bless us for it?  This is nothing but a lie from Satan!

The Mormon Church controls members by convincing them their prophet speaks for God and they must obey. They went so far as to compile a teaching known as “The Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”.

This lesson really had nothing to do with Elisha, Elijah or even God for that matter. This lesson was propaganda to remind members their prophet controls their lives, not God.

It sounds dismal, but God can and will save those who do listen to Him! Everyone that calls themselves a Christian is living proof of His mercy and love so let’s not forget to pray for those caught in the lies of this church!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
