LDS: God Needs Time to Transport Himself

14 April

The Kingdom of God, Pt. 1, No. 2, p. 4 “The Godhead consists of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father is a material being… The substance of his person occupies space the same as other matter. It has solidity, length, breadth, and thickness, like all other matter. The elementary materials of his body are not susceptible of occupying, at the same time, the same identical space with other matter. The substance of his person, like other matter, cannot be in two places at the same instant. It also requires time for him to transport himself from place to place. It matters not how great the velocity of his movements, time is an essential ingredient to all motion, whether rapid or slow.” – Orson Pratt, 1848

Hebrews 4:13 “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.”

In 1857, a twenty-one page booklet was published in Great Britain causing quite the stir – Twenty Reasons for Rejecting Mormonism. How many souls were prevented from joining Mormonism, we’ll never know this side of heaven. What we do know is how the Church reacted to it. Thus far, I’ve seen six of their repudiations to Mr. Taylder’s fine work.

Here’s an excerpt (p. 4) of what he said –

‘…when we read the Book of Mormon we find nothing in it except what is copied, either from the Old or New Testament… From Nephi, who commenced the record 600 years before Christ, to Maroni [sic], who finished it 400 years after Christ, there is the same kind of language used; showing that it is the production of one, and not of numerous writers; and that he lived in modern times…’

As a side note – if you’re familiar with BH Roberts’ book, ‘Studies of the Book of Mormon’, you’ll see the similarities in what’s been said about the BoM. Roberts work of course was written and published much later.

Reviews of Taylder’s work outside the Church were favorable across the board. One even referred to Mormonism as an ‘imposition’. You can download it for free at the link above. All of the references Mr. Taylder used came directly from LDS canon, and writings of various apostles – especially those serving in Great Britain at the time. This would of course, include Orson Pratt.

Our LDS reference today comes from one of the booklets Pratt published at the time, ‘The Kingdom of God’. Here are a few of the questions we have –

If you’re LDS, how do you know God is going to hear your plea/prayer if he can only be in one place at a time?

Why does D&C 38:7 say Jesus is invisible when D&C 130:22 says he has a body of flesh and bones?

What do you do with BoM verses like Mosiah 15:1 that says Jesus and God are the same person?

“And now Abinadi said unto them: I would that ye should understand that God himself shall come down among the children of men, and shall redeem his people.”

If you’re LDS, please know we pray for you every day. Our prayer is that you have a saving knowledge of Christ Jesus and Him crucified. The God of the Bible is Spirit – Jn 4:24 – and He can be with you here, and now.

While Mr. Pratt’s work may have been written 171 years ago, the doctrines he taught then are the same ones you find in the Church today. All of them disagree with God’s word.

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
