More LDS Contradictions about Adam, pt. 2

09 May

James 1:13; “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man.”

LDS LeadersA few days ago we looked at the Mormon’s version of the first man, Adam. See More LDS Contradictions about Adam, pt. 1. Today we’re finishing that up with a number of LDS quotes made by a variety of LDS leaders from Joe Smith, on down.

The one thing to keep in mind while looking over these quotes is God’s word. What would He want for us to know about Adam, and how does the Christian apply this to their daily walk with Him? Equally important, how do we share what we know with the Mormon people?

The 21st century is perhaps one of the scariest times in the history of mankind. Soaking in all the info available is much like trying to take a sip of water from a fire hose.

Our intention for posting all the references is to provide the Christian with the info so they can choose 1-2 they feel will be most helpful to them while witnessing to the Mormon in their life!

I’d love to say this is an exhaustive list, but make no mistake my friend, it doesn’t come close.

When I became a Christian, I’d read what the Church would say which prompted me to do a personal, in-depth word study to find out more about God. Therefore, I’m praying the same will take place with you. While it’s good to know what the enemy is doing, it’s more important to know Christ Jesus and Him crucified. Then, when the deceiver tries to entice a believer they’ll know straightaway if it’s from God, or Satan.

The one thing I knew for sure was the degenerate manner of doctrines from this church. While the horror of who they are has subsided over time for me personally, the totality of what they’ve done never will. Oh, how I wish I was being melodramatic in my analysis, but the truth is there aren’t enough bad words in the English language to describe how awful this is. And for that our hearts are sad, thus the ministry!

Last, but certainly not least, events in the Garden of Eden were not what God had originally intended for mankind. That’s not to say He didn’t know it wouldn’t happen though! (Psalm 139:1–6) Furthermore, He didn’t trick them into sinning! (James 1:13). Don’t let the Mormon go off on rabbit trails to change the subject matter. They’ve been trained to do this, and it’s important for the Christian to stay focused!

The Creation of Adam
The First Presidency, Joseph F. Smith, John R. Winder, Anthon H. Lund “THE ORIGIN OF MAN,” Improvement Era, Vol. 13, November 1909, pp. 75-81. [Also in Joseph Fielding Smith, Man: His Origin and Destiny, pp. 348-355; James R. Clark, Messages of the First Presidency, 4:199-206.]

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, basing its belief on divine revelation, ancient and modern, proclaims man to be the direct and lineal offspring of Deity.

(The First Presidency in Melvin A. and M. Garfield Cook, Science & Mormonism [SLC: Deseret Book Company, 1973], p. 156; in Messages of the First Presidency 4:266.)

“In a letter to Samuel O. Bennion, February 26, 1912, Joseph F. Smith, Anthon H. Lund and Charles W. Penrose stated: But President Young went on to show that our Father Adam—that is our earthy father—the progenitor of the race of man, stands at the head being ‘Michael the Archangel, the Ancient of Days,’ and that he was not fashioned from earth life and adobe but begotten by his Father in Heaven.”

Conference Report, April 1973, pp. 133-136; “The truth I desire to emphasize today is that we mortals are in very deed the literal offspring of God.” – Marion G. Romney

Delivered Dec 7, 1913 at Mesa, AZ, Deseret Evening News, Dec. 27, 1913, Sec. 3, p. 7; “I know that God is a being with body, parts and passions and that His Son, Jesus Christ, grew and developed into manhood the same as you or I, as likewise did God, His Father, grow and develop to the Supreme Being that He now is. Man was born of woman; Christ, the Savior, was born of woman, and God, the Father, was born of woman. Adam, our earthly parent, was also born of woman into this world, the same as Jesus and you and I.” – Joseph F. Smith

Gospel Doctrine, pp. 25, 62; “God was and is our Father, and his children were begotten in the flesh of his own image and likeness, male and female….

God originated and designed all things, and all are his children. We are born into the world as his offspring; endowed with the same attributes. The children of men have sprung from the Almighty, whether the world is willing to acknowledge it or not. He is the Father of our spirits. He is the originator of our earthly tabernacles.” – Joseph F. Smith

Melchizedek Priesthood Manual, 1980-81, p. 36; “Luke 3:38. What does this verse reveal about the origin of Adam’s physical body? “As to the manner in which Adam was placed on the earth, the First Presidency of the Church … has given us this plain statement: ‘He took upon him an appropriate body, the body of a man, and so became a “living soul.”… All who have inhabited the earth since Adam have taken bodies and become souls in like manner.’”

Millennial Star, 23:654, 12 Oct 1861; “He [Brigham Young] unmistakably declares man’s origins to be altogether of a celestial character–that not only is his spirit of heavenly descent, but his bodily organization, too–that the latter is not taken from the lower animals, but from the original celestial body of the great Father of humanity.” – George Q. Cannon

“Divine Mission of the Savior,” Course of Study for the Quorums of the Priesthood, 1910, pp. 35, 37; “Man is, in the most literal sense, a child of God. This is not only true of the spirit of man, but of his body also….

One of the important points about this topic is to learn, if possible, how Adam obtained his body of flesh and bones. There would seem to be but one natural and reasonable explanation, and that is, that Adam obtained his body in the same way Christ obtained his — and just as all men obtain theirs — namely, by being born of woman.” – Orson F. Whitney

General Conference Address, Ensign, November 1984, pp. 66-69; “…every verse, whether oft-quoted or obscure, must be measured against other verses. … not all that God has said is in the Bible. Other scriptures—the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price—have equal validity, and they sustain one another. …

Since every living thing follows the pattern of its parentage, are we to suppose that God had some other strange pattern in mind for His offspring?” – Boyd K. Packer

Journal of Discourses 1:51; “Jesus, our elder brother, was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven. Now, let all who may hear these doctrines, pause before they make light of them, or treat them with indifference, for they will prove their salvation or damnation.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, April 9, 1852

Journal of Discourses 1:238; “… I believe the Father came down from heaven, as the Apostles said he did, and begat the Saviour of the world; for he is the ONLY-begotten of the Father, which could not be if the Father did not actually beget him in person…. I believe the Father came down in His tabernacle and begat Jesus Christ.” – Brigham Young, July 24, 1853

Journal of Discourses 2:6; “You believe Adam was made of the dust of this earth. This I do not believe, though it is supposed that it is so written in the Bible; but it is not to my understanding. You can write that information to the States, if you please – that I have publicly declared that I do not believe that portion of the Bible as the Christian world do. I never did, and I never want to. What is the reason I do not? Because I have come to understanding, and banished from my mind all the baby stories my mother taught me when I was a child.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, October 23, 1853

Journal of Discourses 3:319-320; “Though we have it in history that our father Adam was made of the dust of this earth, and that he knew nothing about his God previous to being made here, yet it is not so; and when we learn the truth we shall see and understand that he helped to make this world, and was the chief manager in that operation. He was the person who brought the animals and the seeds from other planets to this world, and brought a wife with him and stayed here. You may read and believe what you please as to what is found written in the Bible. Adam was made from the dust of an earth, but not from the dust of this earth. He was made as you and I are made, and no person was ever made upon any other principle.” –Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, April 20, 1856

Journal of Discourses 5:331; “Some have grumbled because I believe our God to be so near to us as Father Adam. There are many who know that doctrine to be true.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, October 7, 1857

Journal of Discourses 4:217-218; “Thus you may continue and trace the human family back to Adam and Eve, and ask, “are we of the same species with Adam and Eve?” Yes, every person acknowledges this; this comes within the scope of our understanding.

But when we arrive at that point, a vail [sic] is dropt, and our knowledge is cut off. Were it not so, you could trace back your history to the Father of our spirits in the eternal world. He is a being of the species as ourselves; He lives as we do, except the difference that we are earthly, and He is heavenly. He has been earthly, and is of precisely the same species of being that we are….

Things were first created spiritually; the Father actually begat the spirits, and they were brought forth and lived with Him. Then He commenced the work of creating earthly tabernacles, precisely as He had been created in this flesh Himself…” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, February 8, 1857

Journal of Discourses 7:285-286; “When you tell me that father Adam was made as we make adobes from the earth, you tell me what I deem an idle tale. When you tell me that the beasts of the field were produced in that manner, you are speaking idle words devoid of meaning. There is no such thing in all the eternities where the Gods dwell.

Mankind are here because they are the offspring of parents who were first brought here from another planet, and power was given them to propagate their species, and they were commanded to multiply and replenish the earth.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, October 9, 1859

Journal of Discourses 9:40; “This brings to my mind the vision that Joseph Smith had, when he saw Adam open the gate of the Celestial City and admit the people one by one. He then saw Father Adam conduct them to the throne one by one, when they were crowned Kings and Priests of God. I merely bring this up to impress upon your mind the principles of order, but it will nevertheless apply to every member of the Church.” – Heber C. Kimball, Salt Lake City, March 17, 1861

Journal of Discourses 9:283; “Man is the offspring of God…. We are as much the children of this great Being as we are the children of our mortal progenitors. We are flesh of his flesh, bone of his bone, and the same fluid that circulates in our bodies, called blood, once circulated in His veins as it does in ours. As the seeds of grains, vegetables and fruits produce their kind, so man is in the image of God.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, February 23, 1862

Journal of Discourses 11:122; “[God] created man, as we create our children; for there is no other process of creation in heaven, on the earth, in the earth, or under the earth, or in all the eternities, that is, that were, or that will ever be.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, June 18, 1865

Discourses of Brigham Young, p. 222JD 13:310;

Some say, “We are the children of Adam and Eve.” So we are, and they are the children of our Heavenly Father. We are all the children of Adam and Eve, and they are the offspring of him who dwells in the heavens, the highest Intelligence that dwells anywhere that we have any knowledge of.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, April 17, 1870

Journal of Discourses 15:137; “And when our spirits receive our bodies, and through our faithfulness we are worthy to be crowned, we will then receive authority to produce both spirit and body.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, August 24, 1872

The Gospel, An Exposition of Its First Principles & Man’s Relationship to Deity, p. 281-282; “[Adam was] brought forth by the natural laws of procreation… in some other world.” – B. H. Roberts

Wilford Woodruff Journal, Assorted Entries

Journal of Wilford Woodruff, Feb. 19, 1854; “He [Brigham Young] said that our God was Father Adam. He was the Father of the Savior Jesus Christ – Our God was no more or less than ADAM, Michael the Archangel.”

As Quoted in the Wilford Woodruff’s Journal, April 9, 1852; “Our Father begot all the spirits that were before any tabernacle was made. When our Father came into the Garden He came with his Celestial body and brought one of his wives with him and ate of the fruit of the Garden until He could beget a Tabernacle. And Adam is Michael God and all the God that we have anything to do with. They ate of this fruit and formed the first Tabernacle that was formed. And when the Virgin Mary was begotten with Child it was by the Father and in no other way only as we were begotten. I will tell you the truth as it is in God. The world don’t know that Jesus Christ our Elder Brother was begotten by our Father in Heaven. Handle it was you please, it will either seal the damnation or salvation of man. He was begotten by the Father and not by the Holy Ghost.” – Brigham Young

“On January 27, 1860, Elder Wilford Woodruff recorded the minutes of a meeting which was held by the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve in which they met to discuss some of the doctrines which were being taught by Orson Pratt.

This journal entry of Elder Woodruff quotes President Young as saying that Adam came to this earth as a resurrected being.
Michael was a resurrected Being and he left Eloheim and came to this earth & with an immortal body, & continued so till he par-took of earthly food and begot children who were mortal.”

“Minutes of the Meeting of the Council of the Twelve in Historian’s Upper Room,” April 5, 1860, 10 a.m.; “I have heard brother Brigham say that Adam is the Father of our spirits, and he came here with his resurrected body, to fall for his own children; and I said to him, it leads to an endless number of falls, which leads to sorrow and death: that is revolting to my feelings, even if it were not sustained by revelation.” – Orson Pratt

“The Creation of Man,” Course of Study for Priests, 1910; “Man has descended from God: in fact, he is of the same race as the Gods. His descent has not been from a lower from of life, bur from the Highest Form of Life; in other words, man is, in the most literal sense, a child of God. This is not only true of the spirit of man, but of his body also.” – B. H. Roberts

A Bible! A Bible!, pp. 188-189, 193-194; “I believe that Adam’s physical body was the offspring of God, literally (Moses 6:22); that he was begotten as a baby with a physical body not subject to death, in a world without sin or blood; and that he grew to manhood in that condition and then became mortal through his own actions. I believe that Adam’s physical body was begotten by our immortal celestial Father and an immortal celestial Mother, and thus not into a condition of mortality, a condition which would have precluded Jesus from being the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh (D&C 93:11)–flesh meaning mortality. Jesus’ physical body was also begotten of the same celestial Father but through a mortal woman and hence into mortality.” – Robert J. Matthews

Letters to Gibbs, 1903 in E. Dale LeBaron, (1967), pp. 340-341; “[The Prophet Joseph Smith] taught us that God was the great head of human procreation–was really and truly the father of both our spirits and our bodies.” – Joseph F. Smith, Benjamin F. Johnson

Doctrines of Salvation 1:101-103; “This is from one of the discourses of Brigham Young: “We are all the children of Adam and Eve, and they are the offspring of Him who dwells in the heavens, the Highest Intelligence that dwells anywhere that we have any knowledge of….”

He also taught that, literally, God is our Father; than men are of the same race–the race called humans; and that God, the Progenitor, or Creator, is the Father of the human race….” – Joseph Fielding Smith

Delbert L. Stapley, BYU, May 5, 1964 in R. Wayne Shute, His Servants Speak, pg. 3; “The scriptures teach us that we are descended from the lineage of the Gods; therefore, we are created in their likeness and image, in both spirit and body…”
