LDS: Anti-Polygamy Laws Aimed at Religion, not Morality

Religious Persecution?

Journal of Discourses 24:38-45 “…we believe in marriage, we have opened the door in that direction, and we say to the sexes marry; but we close the door in the other direction, and say, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not seduce, defile, prostitute or lead astray innocent beings; if you do, and we had the power, we would punish you. …it was plain to be seen that nothing in that bill [Edmunds Bill] was designed to reach real vice, to strike down immorality; it was a blow at our religious practices.” — George Quayle Cannon, Salt Lake City, Sunday, June 25, 1882

Romans 13:1 “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”

The Church has always been fond of using selective verses of the Bible best suited for their needs of the day. Case in point is the Edmunds Bill; the precursor to the Edmunds-Tucker Act of 1890.

Today we see how Mr. Cannon argued for their right to practice polygamy while pointing fingers at non-Mormons for doing the very thing they were guilty of – adultery. Changing the definition of basic English words got them nowhere fast. Religious liberty comes with a price, and that’s adherence to laws of the land.

Believing you’ve been persecuted for your religious beliefs doesn’t make it so. Moreover, God has made it very clear in His word. Don’t sleep around. If you’re married, be faithful and stay that way.

The Edmunds Bill was written to abolish polygamy, which is nothing more than a caste system. Mr. Cannon and others of his day placed demands on everyone that God had no intention of implementing.

If polygamy is essential to salvation, what’s the deal with Jesus? Why drag His name through the muddy waters of your fraudulent behavior?

It’s obvious even the top leader of Mormonism today is a staunch supporter of the godhood and families are forever plan. He’s not married to more than one woman right now, but his big plans are to be a polygamous god in the hereafter someday. It’s absolutely heart wrenching to see how people fall for these lies!

Because of his high profile, and the loving adoration received from members today, we can know he’s leading the next generation away from God, not to Him! Pray for them won’t  you?

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
