Joseph Smith’s Polygamy Lies

17 August

Colossians 3:9; “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.”

The LDS Church has gone out of its way lately to publicly denounce the sins of others in society, so we’re wondering when, or rather if, they’re ever going to publicly denounce their own.Joseph Smith 8

Joe Smith was a busy guy with all the face to face meetings with God and subsequent prophecies he had to dole out. In addition to that, he had numerous obligations stemming from his position of self-anointed General, and being a husband to so many wives. It’s a wonder the guy ever had time to sleep!

As we were going through some polygamy articles the other day I began wondering about their prophet, Thomas S. Monson…

By the end of 1843 Smith had of 40+ wives. However, the guy kept lying about the wives he had, and what they were doing as a church even after he publicly announced God had told him and others to practice polygamy.

Take a look at some chronological facts –

In July 1843 Smith prophesied that God commanded the Saints to practice polygamy.

In October 1843 Smith publicly denounced polygamy and ‘went looking’ for people who were advocating such a thing.

Why would a prophet of God do this?

If modern-day prophet Monson publicly told everyone they couldn’t practice polygamy, but did so anyway, what would the Mormon’s reaction be?

Would they fire him? Accept it? Would they say something?

We’re wondering why Smith has been allowed a free pass all this time if it wouldn’t be acceptable today?

In addition to the contradictory behavior issues Smith had going on, why did he continue to lie to the parishioners as well?

And why pray tell, does the Church keep these things in their canon?

Is the behavior of Joseph Smith and the LDS Church a model of Colossians 3:9?

Polygamy for Salvation

History of the Church 5:500-501; “Revelation on the Eternity of the Marriage Covenant, including the Plurality of Wives. Given through Joseph, the Seer, in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois, July 11th, 1843, Verily thus saith the Lord unto you my servant Joseph, that inasmuch as you have inquired of my hand to know and understand wherein I the Lord justified my servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as also Moses, David, and Solomon my servants, as touching the principle and doctrine of their having many wives and concubines… Therefore prepare thy heart to receive and obey the instructions which I am about to give unto you; for all those who have this law revealed unto them must obey the same; for, behold, I reveal unto you a new and an everlasting covenant; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned…and he that receiveth a fulness thereof must and shall abide the law, or he shall be damned, saith the Lord God…Abraham received promises concerning his seed and of the fruit of his loins,—from whose loins ye are—…Go ye, therefore, and do the works of Abraham; enter ye into my law, and ye shall be saved…” – Joseph Smith, July 11, 1843

Polygamy for Salvation

Doctrine and Covenants 132:4, 34, 54; “For behold, I reveal unto you a new and an everlasting covenant; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned; for no one can reject this covenant and be permitted to enter into my glory. 34 God commanded Abraham, and Sarah gave Hagar to Abraham to wife. And why did she do it? Because this was the law; and from Hagar sprang many people. This, therefore, was fulfilling, among other things, the promises. 54 And I command mine handmaid, Emma Smith, to abide and cleave unto my servant Joseph, and to none else. But if she will not abide this commandment she shall be destroyed, saith the Lord; for I am the Lord thy God, and will destroy her if she abide not in my law.” – Joseph Smith, Nauvoo, Illinois, July 12, 1843

One Wife at a Time

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp. 323-324; “In the afternoon, rode to the prairie to show some of the brethren some land. Evening, at home, and walked up and down the streets with my scribe. Gave instructions to try those persons who were preaching, teaching, or practicing the doctrine of plurality of wives; for, according to the law, I hold the keys of this power in the last days; for there is never but one on earth at a time on whom the power and its keys are conferred; and I have constantly said no man shall have but one wife at a time, unless the Lord directs otherwise. (Oct. 5, 1843.) —DHC 6:46.” – Joseph Smith [emp. mine]

One Wife at a Time

History of the Church 6:46; “Instructions Respecting Plurality of Wives. In the afternoon, rode to the prairie to show some of the brethren some land. Evening, at home, and walked up and down the streets with my scribe.
