Jesus’ Blood Doesn’t Save You

Journal of Discourses 7:298-299“Jesus was anointed and preferred before others, from the simple fact that he loved righteousness better than others, and hated iniquity more. And hence it is written—”For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.” (Hebrews 2:10.)…pg. 299… He not only recommended to the world obedience, but was himself a living pattern and example of that obedience which he taught, and through that obedience merited that which was conferred upon him. Hence we read that he was exalted above his brethren, simply because he loved righteousness and hated iniquity; and it is that same principle that saves you and me. We may talk of men being redeemed by the efficacy of his blood; but the truth is that that blood has no efficacy to wash away our sins. That must depend upon our own action.” – Elder Amasa Lyman, Salt Lake City, December 25, 1859

Hebrews 2:10“For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.”

This man, Amasa Lyman, stood up before a crowd of people on Christmas morning in the Salt Lake Valley and gave a rather lengthy discourse on his beliefs about Jesus Christ. The small section we’ve listed here is just a taste of what he said about God Incarnate. Now while we’re all aware that December 25th probably isn’t the true birthday of Jesus, but for all intents purpose it’s the day we celebrate His birth.

The point to this is that if someone will go to such great lengths to speak so despairingly about God, not to mention doing it on His birthday, reveals his lack of respect for the Lord. How could you? Have you no shame?

Jesus was anointed simply because he loved righteousness more than others??? Mr. Lyman sir, Jesus is GOD!!!

And to infer Jesus’ blood had no efficacy to wash away our sins is nothing short of blasphemy. Why did this man consider himself a Christian if he didn’t believe Jesus’ blood bought his salvation?

Furthermore, the passage in Hebrews isn’t saying  Jesus wasn’t perfect. What the author was saying is that God made His Son Jesus the captain over our salvation, and put Him in charge of redeeming us. Our salvation was made perfect through His sacrifice! Jesus was not sinful as this man so boldly declared; rather, Jesus is both man and God in the flesh and still remained sinless, thus qualifying for the position of redeeming mankind. Just as Boaz qualified to be the Kinsman Redeemer for Ruth, so also Jesus fulfilled the requirements to be our Kinsman Redeemer, giving us eternal life with the Father.

It is during speeches like this I often wonder how people didn’t stone this guy while standing up on a stage with such blasphemy pouring from his lips. I have to believe they were so blinded by Satan they weren’t cognitively aware of what he was saying.

Sadly, Mormons today still believe this type of dogma. Mormon temples, clothing and dietary laws, and mandatory missionary service tell us nothing has changed since the Mr. Lyman delivered this horrific speech.

Pray for Mormons to come to a saving knowledge of Him who was crucified for us all.

This article was originally posted in 2012. The reason we’re re-posting it is because of the number of e-mails we’re receiving as of late from Mormons who want to know why the blood of Jesus is such a big deal. Over the next few weeks as we get closer to celebrating the birth of Jesus, we’ll be looking at several aspects about Jesus which will include some previously published articles.  Now, here’s the original post!

With Love in Christ;
