The Agenda of the Mormon Church

Yesterday (October 30, 2011) I received a couple of e-mails from a Mormon asking me how many church services I had attended and then posting the link below into his note.

While I’m not exactly sure what’s meant in his notes I thought I’d add them here and give my response to the link he sent to me.

From Ethan John (e-mail addy withheld):

1.    ok just curious how many times have you attended LDS church?

2.      O.M.Goshhhh   no waaay 😯

This website is a basic information portal for some of the beliefs of the Church with little snippets of members’ testimonies.

When I clicked on the link a page came up that gave their views on the Bible and then gave a list of Mormons who had decided to give their interpretation of what they personally believe about the Bible.  The following four quotes are from that page.

Do Mormons regard the Bible as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

Mormons believe, revere and love the Holy Bible. We see it as a powerful, important, and sacred holy record which serves as the bedrock of all Christianity. The Bible is rich in history, doctrine, stories, sermons and testimonies, all of which witness that Jesus Christ is the Divine Son of our Heavenly Father. The Bible is the word of God and came from the writings of holy men of God as they were moved upon by the Holy Ghost (see 2 Peter 1:20-21). Through the same process we have additional Holy Scripture, including the Book of Mormon, which supports and exalts the Bible.

John answered…Yes, Mormons do believe the Bible to be Holy Scripture. Sadly, there are many different Bibles out there and they teach different principles. Because different Bibles teach Christ’s doctorine [sic] in different ways, we need the Book of Mormon to correct the confusing bits of doctorine [sic] found in the Bible.

James answered…Yes. I believe the Bible is Holy Scripture and the word of God as far as it is translated correctly.

Carl answered…The church’s articles of faith state “we believe the Bible to be the word of God, as far as it is translated correctly.” I, for one, am quite comfortable simply saying that some parts of the Bible are simply uninspired, however they got there. However, the vast majority of it is foundational to our understanding of God’s dealing with man and Christ’s earthly ministry, and is well worth studying.

It’s interesting to note how the Church so clearly defined their views on the Bible while not telling the whole story.  That part was obviously left up to the individual Mormons along with a disclaimer their views are their own (“Read other answers contributed by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Answers are the sole responsibility of the members”).

Huh?  Why not just tell the reader that what they’re saying are the teachings of the Church?

8th Article of Faith;

We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

My heart is broken for the people who are so confused that their sentences are nothing but contradictions.  They believe the bible…but they don’t believe it’s inspired…they believe it was written by inspired men who were moved upon by the Holy Ghost…but they don’t believe it’s been protected by God to reveal His will to us…

And the comment from the Mormon named John made me the saddest.  Specifically, what Bibles is he referring to?  I’m not a bible scholar, but I’ve never heard of “different bibles that teach different principles”.  And which parts of the Book of Mormon clear up the confusing parts of the Bible?

This website looks like an easy way to look Christian to those who know nothing about Mormonism.  It looks like they’re slapping something up real quick to mislead people for those who are looking for info on Mitt Romney and what he believes.

I also found it interesting that by clicking on different pages within this site you’ll be reading contradictory material from what is in the Book of Mormon.  For instance, when you click on the link for “Our Faith” and then “Jesus Christ, Our Savior”, you’ll read that Jesus was born in Bethlehem.  The Book of Mormon says he was born in Jerusalem, so which is it?

Alma 7:10; “And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God.

Be careful my friend, this time the devil really is in the details.

“Do Mormons regard the Bible as Holy Scripture and the word of God?” Not really, take for instance Bruce R, McConkie’s view of the bible.

“The Bible of the Old World has come to us from the manuscripts of antiquity—manuscripts which passed through the hands of uninspired men who changed many parts to suit their own doctrinal ideas. Deletions were common, and, as it now stands, many plain and precious portions and many covenants of the Lord have been lost. As a consequence, those who rely upon it alone stumble and are confused….” (The Ensign December 1985, p 55). – Melissa Grimes a.k.a discoveringgrace
