Greek and Latin Words in the Book of Mormon Part 3

 Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 299;To the Editor of the Times & Seasons:  Sir:—… There was no Greek of Latin upon the plates from which I, through the grace of God, translated the Book of Mormon. Let the language of that book speak for itself.

      With your endless patience in the past five or six months here we are to present to all of you our findings regarding Joseph Smith’s claims and the Book of Mormon!  To recap, Smith made the bold claim there were no Greek or Latin words in the translation of the Book of Mormon.  He claimed the Book of Mormon was originally etched onto brass and golden plates in a language called “Reformed Egyptian”.

     To date, there have been no such plates found or placed on display as proof of Smith’s claims and here we are some one hundred and eighty years later knowing they’re a hoax.

     And speaking of hoaxes, the idea there are no Greek and/or Latin words in the Book of Mormon is just that.  Mark Twain once said; “The Book of Mormon is chloroform in print”.  I would have to agree.  Trying to stay awake during all of the “and it came to pass” verses was a feat.

     English is a Germanic language with Indo-European roots.  The Indo-European Family is a compilation of several languages that is divided into twelve branches, ten of which are in existence today.  Two of those branches are Greek and Latin.

     To summarize:  English cannot be spoken without using Greek and Latin words.

     Many people believe I take great pleasure in spending an insane amount of time thinking of topics to investigate and write about.  I can assure the reader nothing could be further from the truth.  It actually sickens me to the core.  I feel like I’m “ratting out” all of my family members and worse yet abandoning them.  The reason I do these things is to show how awful it is to be caught up in the web of lies with no way out.  Reality tells us that it is worse to keep running in spiritually frantic circles than it is to lance the wound and free it of infection.

     My experience of counting all the words and the number of times they occur taught me many good lessons.  My family and I eventually dubbed it the “project from hell” as it seemed it would never end.  I actually envisioned myself still counting words at the end of the 2008 baseball season.  (I began in the middle of the ’07 season)  However, the lessons learned have far outweighed the hours spent and I am again grateful to our Sovereign God that He upheld us during it!

     We’ll be using the information we found for several different articles and topics, but in a nutshell here are a few of the main themes you can find in the Book of Mormon:

 1. The god of the Book of Mormon doesn’t keep his promises.

2. The god of the Book of Mormon isn’t Omnipotent.  He isn’t great or strong enough to keep his followers from falling into idolatry.

3. The god of the Book of Mormon is unforgiving.  Death and destruction reign throughout the Book of Mormon.

4. The god of the Book of Mormon hates dark skinned people.

5. The god of the Book of Mormon contradicts himself when giving people commandments.  (Examples – the confounding of languages in Ether and Lehi leaving Jerusalem in 600 BC)

6. The god of the Book of Mormon forced his people to sin – he continually set them up to fail throughout the thousand year saga.

7. The god of the Book of Mormon is not omniscient as he had to be reminded by Jared to put breathing holes in some boat.

      As you can imagine, we have not listed all of the Greek and Latin words contained in the Book of Mormon.  I’d be here until the end of the 2009 MLB season – yikes!  The work presented isn’t scientific, nor is it complete by any stretch of the imagination.  Most importantly you need to know here and now it probably has mistakes as well.  While we did spend a long period of time analyzing and correcting our findings, we also know our faults.  J

     I truly believe one of the biggest lies in the Book of Mormon can be found in Alma 12:26 which says;

 “And now behold, if it were possible that our first parents could have gone forth and partaken of the tree of life they would have been forever miserable, having no preparatory state; and thus the plan of redemption would have been frustrated, and the word of God would have been void, taking none effect.

      After all, if you cannot accept the fact that man is inherently evil, everything else is based upon a lie.

     In total we found 7,289 Greek and/or Latin words in the Book of Mormon.  Technically, this is how many times Smith lied.  This doesn’t account for the words that I didn’t mark and count, but took note of and have listed below.

    Most of the words chosen were based solely on personal opinion and what caught our attention.  For example I counted the Greek word “know”.  Since I’ve become a Christian I’ve been taught by reputable Christian pastors and teachers how to pick out key words in verses that will tell you to pay attention.  The word “know” is an example of this. It tells me that either God knows something or I should know something, thus signifying its importance.  This particular word showed up 885 times.  It seems the Mormon god had a lot to say and wanted for the people to know and understand his message; however as you well know, that obviously didn’t pan out too well for him.

     There are also a few other words listed which may seem totally off the wall, but there is a reason!  They are: notwithstanding, nevertheless, insomuch and inasmuch.

     As I said they probably sound just totally random, but if you’ve read the Book of Mormon in depth you’ll know why we did this.  These four words appear quite often throughout the text as well as appearing together in the same sentence.  In doing so, it negates the message being conveyed.  Here is an example:

 2 Nephi 4:17; “Nevertheless, notwithstanding the great goodness of the Lord, in showing me his great and marvelous works, my heart exclaimeth: O wretched man that I am! Yea, my heart sorroweth because of my flesh; my soul grieveth because of mine iniquities.”

 3 Nephi 11:3; “And it came to pass that while they were thus conversing one with another, they heard a voice as if it came out of heaven; and they cast their eyes round about, for they understood not the voice which they heard; and it was not a harsh voice, neither was it a loud voice; nevertheless, and notwithstanding it being a small voice it did pierce them that did hear to the center, insomuch that there was no part of their frame that it did not cause to quake; yea, it did pierce them to the very soul, and did cause their hearts to burn.”

 4 Nephi 1:31; “Nevertheless, and notwithstanding all these miracles, the people did harden their hearts, and did seek to kill them, even as the Jews at Jerusalem sought to kill Jesus, according to his word.”

      The number of times each word appears in the Book of Mormon is listed after each word.  We’ll be posting the entire article on the site with detailed word counts, please be patient as it is a huge document and will take a fair amount of time to publish!

     I could write volumes on how shocked we were to realize just how extensive this lie was that Smith told, but it’d belabor the point.  The document we’ve provided speaks for itself.

     Join us in prayer for the Mormon people won’t you?  Pray for their eyes to be opened to God’s truth and love.  And as a reminder; we’re not anti-Mormon. The truth is that we love the people deeply; it’s the Mormon teachings we disagree with.

 With Love in Christ;

Michelle
