General Conference April 2012

No Ordinary Blessing

Every faithful Mormon waits with bated breath to hear what message the men who they view as prophets, seers, and revelators of God, might have for them that day. I can’t tell you what a thrill they get to hear these men speak, as they hang on every word spoken.

Here is just one example of how they view the words of these men.

“Since the world began, God has raised up prophets who speak the will of heaven to the people of their times. It is our responsibility to listen and then apply the messages the Lord provides for us. Our merciful and loving Heavenly Father has not forsaken and will not forsake His children. Today, as well as in times past, He has appointed apostles and prophets. He continues to reveal His word to them.” – (President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, September 2011 Ensign)

There’s the problem, God doesn’t speak to us through living prophets, but through his Son.

Hebrews 1:1-2 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.

What the Mormons can only look forward to twice a year Christians can take in and feast on all year round. We can get that “thrill” of knowing God is teaching us something from His Word during our church and worship service, through the week in our bible study meetings, and in our own personal study.

What Mormons don’t seem to get is –

  1. If we are followers of Jesus, meaning we’ve repented of our sins and put our salvation in His hands we have the Holy Spirit to be with us always.

Ephesians 1:13 -14 reads-“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

  1. We have His word. We have God’s precious word to read and draw from daily.  2 Timothy 3:16-17 reads –

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

What I wish Mormons could understand is if we have the Holy Spirit, the Bible and most of all Jesus, we don’t need new prophecy from self-proclaimed prophets, as the end of the Law has been fulfilled through Jesus and God has told us what to look for through His Son.

Do Mormons really think God is so absent minded that he just forgot to add vital things for our salvation in His word? Anyone who is a true prophet would never contradict what God has said, nor would his words hold more value and trump the Word of the Lord.

As I see it the only purpose for a “living prophet” in Mormonism is to keep the members in bondage and bound to the “laws” of their religion. They’re commanded to “follow the prophet”; to adhere to all he says and promptly obey when asked to do something. Not choosing to obey or being slow to comply, could prove to be detrimental to a Mormon’s social standing in the church community.

It just boggles my mind, it really does. I ask our faithful readers to join us at Life After Ministries to pray for the Mormons. Pray that the scales will fall from their eyes and they will see that they don’t need mortal men to tell what they can or can’t eat or drink, how many earrings a woman can have, or what type of underwear to buy.

Indeed, God has not “forsaken” us, and He speaks to us today if we’re willing to listen.

In Christ,

Melissa Grimes
