General Conference April 2011

Twice a year General Conference is held at the headquarters of the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City.

General Conference is a series of  talks given by LDS leaders throughout the week leading up to the actual weekend of General Conference with the apex of all meetings taking place on Sunday.  It’s a time for members to vote on important issues like sustaining a new prophet or apostle or even voting in a new prophecy from the Lord.

Most local ward buildings are darkened and parking lots sit empty the first Sunday of every April and October so members can watch their leaders’ messages that are broadcast through satellite into the comfort of their own home.  In the impoverished areas of the world wards are opened so members can watch conference at their facilities, but hymns and lessons are all put on hold.

I’ve always found that fascinating.  If they’re Christians why aren’t they worshipping Jesus?

For the lucky few who are able to secure tickets to the event it is an experience never forgotten and cherished for a lifetime.  The most coveted day to attend is always the last day of conference when the prophet is sure to make an appearance.

This year Melissa will be posting her insights so be sure to check in later this week for the update!

To give you an early look into the talks here’s what was said on Saturday:

To those who are non-members of our church I invite you to exercise faith, repent, and qualify to receive the covenant of baptism in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. By doing so you will show your love to our Heavenly Father and your willingness to follow Christ.”  (Elder Walter F. Gonzalez, April 2011 General Conference)

What I found interesting is the front page of www.lds.org today (April 3).

Is it just me or is there a glaring problem?  Jesus is nowhere to be found on the front page of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Hmmm…

How does someone qualify to receive the covenants of baptism?  Is this way to show God that you love Him?

Let us hear your opinion!
