False Prophecies for Mormon’s First Apostles #5 Lyman Johnson

13 August

History of The Church 2:188; “The blessing of Lyman E. Johnson was, in the name of Jesus Christ, that he should bear the tidings of salvation to nations, tongues, and people, until theLyman Johnson utmost corners of the earth shall hear the tidings; and that he shall be a witness of the things of God to nations and tongues, and that holy angels shall administer to him occasionally; and that no power of the enemy shall prevent him from going forth and doing the work of the Lord; and that he shall live until the gathering is accomplished, according to the holy prophets; and he shall be like unto Enoch; and his faith shall be like unto his; and he shall be called great among all the living; and Satan shall tremble before him; and he shall see the Savior come and stand upon the earth with power and great glory.” – Joseph Smith

2 Peter 2:1; “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.”

Before we dig in here, I have to highlight two important points with our Bible verse today.

Mormons see this verse, and others like it, as proof for their restoration movement. They believe that when the last original apostle died, Christianity as a whole went with it. While doing all this, they reject the idea Peter’s warning is for us today.

The second point is that Mormons deny Jesus bought their salvation. This is one of the most powerful verses in all of the Bible!

Now, on to our subject matter!

Lyman Johnson’s life and association with the Mormon Church, was fast paced and short lived. Within seven years of meeting Smith, Johnson served as a high priest, missionary, foot soldier, and apostle. In 1838 he was excommunicated from the one and only true church along with several others during the huge schism that took place between Smith and most of his chosen leaders. You can read a synopsis of Lyman’s life, with references, at the end of this article.

Just as we looked at the other apostles who were summarily stripped of their godly callings, we’re taking a look at the lies Smith bestowed upon the head of Lyman Johnson on February 14, 1835 as well. His older brother Luke, received a similar blessing the following day.

This time around Smith uttered nine false prophecies, so let’s take a look at them now. Above all else though, please, remember to pray won’t you? The average Mormon hasn’t a clue this is going on in their midst, so if/when you get an opportunity don’t forget to pray and share this with them!

Thanks and God bless!

Blue font indicates Smith’s words.

1.“…he should bear the tidings of salvation to nations, tongues, and people, until the utmost corners of the earth shall hear the tidings…”

Didn’t happen. Lyman Johnson died before everyone on earth heard the Mormon god’s gospel.

2.“… he shall be a witness of the things of God to nations and tongues, and that holy angels shall administer to him occasionally…”

Didn’t happen, or if it did there are no historical accounts of angels visiting him on occasion. Besides, Johnson didn’t travel out of the country, nor did he speak in other tongues.

3.“… no power of the enemy shall prevent him from going forth and doing the work of the Lord…”

Didn’t happen. He dumped Smith and his cronies in 1838.

4.“…he shall live until the gathering is accomplished, according to the holy prophets…”

Didn’t happen. Johnson died in 1859 and the Saints hadn’t gathered back together before his death.

5.“…he shall be like unto Enoch…”

Didn’t happen. As mentioned above, Johnson died in 1859. Technically, he drowned during a boating accident on the Mississippi River.

6.“…his faith shall be like unto his…”

Didn’t happen. Lyman left the Saints in 1838 after a disagreement with Smith over money he lost ($6K) in the Kirtland Banking fiasco. In today’s economy that’d be a hefty chunk of change at $153,846.

7.“…he shall be called great among all the living…”

Really? This too, obviously didn’t happen.

8.“… Satan shall tremble before him…”

Didn’t happen. Imagine the power trip this young man was probably on. He was all of 23 years old and an apostle. Hmm…

9.“… he shall see the Savior come and stand upon the earth with power and great glory…”

Didn’t happen. Unless everyone in the world missed a memo of Jesus’ return, Mr. Johnson was unable to witness every Christian’s blessed hope during his lifetime.
