False Gods

joseph-smith-artTeachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 181;“That which issalt lake mormon temple 2 without body, parts and passions is nothing. There is no other God in heaven but that God who has flesh and bones.”

1 Samuel 5:1-2; “And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Eben-ezer unto Ashdod. 2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.”

dagonThe Bible goes on to tell us of a miraculous, if not downright funny, experience of the Philistines’ false fish god, Dagon. After capturing the Ark of the Covenant, the Philistines placed it in their temple right next to a statue of their false god and went to bed.

The next morning they woke up and found him face down on the floor. They set him upright, went to bed, and when they awoke the next morning, they found he had been decapitated and his limbs removed. Yikes!

Another interesting experience is found in Jonah’s mission. Being told to go to Nineveh, he finally relented and obeyed the Lord. When the Ninevites found him on the shore, they wondered what had happened to the poor fellow. When he began preaching on his three day journey through the city, they repented for their sin of worshiping Nanshe, the female cohort of Dagon. They wasted no time in turning to God, fearing the fish that had spit Jonah out of its mouth.

Jonah 3:4-5; “And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.5 ¶ So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.”

For those who think the Bible is boring, I have to wonder if they missed these two stories in the Bible! I also wonder what the end will be like for the Mormon people, who’ve chosen to worship an imaginary false god.

Why was it so important to Joseph Smith to malign the One True God of the Bible? If God can do things like this, what else might He do?

Don’t miss the opportunity to share these two stories with the Mormon in your life! It’ll give them something to think about in relation to their false god, and show them how God is an interactive God.

Also be sure to point out He’s a God who loves all His children. God was so concerned about the people of Nineveh that He sent Jonah to them, even though they weren’t Israelites!
