False and Pagan Gods in the Bible

21 October

Exodus 15:11; “Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?”

Demonic Names in the Book of MormonAs most people know, Mormonism was founded by Joseph Smith, Jr., a 14 year old farm boy from upstate New York in the early 1800’s. He descended from parents, who by most accounts, delved in the world of various types of witchcraft, as is evidenced from writings and sermons he delivered until his death in 1844.

Initially, the god Smith embraced had many similarities with the God of the Bible, but as time progressed, so did his god. By the time of his death, the religious empire he built held few, if any vestiges of Christianity, and looked more like a hodgepodge of several religious gods combined.

Overall, there’s no hard and fast rule in defining Smith’s god, however, you can find similarities of it in the Bible by the names of Ba’al, Ashtoreth, and Mulek, to name a few.

Our purpose with this document is to provide definitions for some of the false gods in the Bible that God specifically warned us against worshiping. We’re praying when Mormons read this, they’ll be able to identify the major problems in the false god they’re worshiping who was an invention of Joe Smith’s imagination.

The Bible lists 8,747 verses referencing false gods with stern warnings of keeping yourself clean from participating in their nefarious manners. While not all of the false/pagan gods listed here can be suitably ascribed to Smith’s beliefs, we found several with striking similarities;

Amon                              Golden calf

Anamelech                     Milcom/Molech

Asherah                           Nebo

Ashtoreth                         Queen of Heaven/Ishtar

Ba’al                                  Sikkuth

Chemosh                          Tammuz

Diana/Artemis                  Tartak

While compiling this list I came across names of gods I had referenced in a series of articles ‘Demonic & Ungodly Names in the Book of Mormon’ several years ago.

The names of the false/pagan gods also reminded me of my childhood growing up in Utah. For some reason the founders of Utah felt it necessary to bequeath some of their towns, mountains, and even a school district, with the names of pagan gods we see in the Bible. Somehow, this isn’t surprising, albeit disheartening to say the least,

Moab, UT

Mt. Nebo

Nebo School District

I accepted the Lord and was saved more than twenty years ago and still, each day I can’t believe I was blessed in the manner I was! Pray with us that we can all praise Jesus each day for what He’s done, and share the joy and reason for our hope with a Mormon!
