Eyring: Don’t Focus on Facts When Students Doubt

05 July

 “‘And Thus We See’: Helping a Student in a Moment of Doubt” [address to Church Educational System religious educators, Feb. 5, 1993], 3, 4; si.lds.org “In your love for them you may decide to try to give them what they ask. You may be tempted to go with them through their doubts, with the hope that you can find proof or reasoning to dispel their doubts. Persons with doubts often want to talk about what they think are the facts or the arguments that have caused their doubts, and about how much it hurts. …

“You and I can do better if we do not stay long with what our students see as the source of their doubts. … Their problem does not lie in what they think they see; it lies in what they cannot yet see. … We do best if we turn the conversation soon to the things of the heart, those changes of the heart that open spiritual eyes.” — Henry B. Eyring

Acts 17:11 “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

Of all things…good grief.

The old adage, ‘good teachers are great students’ kept going through my thoughts when I read Eyring’s statement.

This man is in a position of authority with the Church. Most regrettably, he has a worldwide platform to declare truth, and this is the way he’s chosen to use that time.

It’s not only sad for him personally, but for those within earshot of his lies. This includes his students, their parents, and any future kids students will one day bring into this world.

Sticking your head in the sand may be a quick fix for the moment, but the day will come when you’ll be answering to Him who gave you the opportunity to seek out, and tell the truth.

This talk may have taken place in 1993, but when I searched the net for further info I noticed a number of personal sites who glorified Eyring’s talk. Sadly, they’ve done exactly as Mr. Eyring suggested.

Pray for those who’ve bought into this horrific lie, and that they’ll investigate the truth!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
